BOOK GIVEAWAY – Just Courage by IJM Founder Gary Haugen

just-courage-haugenSix months ago, I had the opportunity to chat a little with Gary Haugen, the founder of International Justice Mission. My friend Bethany, who also works at IJM, set up the call and I blogged about it here.

As I was flipping through the channels a few weeks ago, I stopped on a Dateline episode with the title “Children for Sale.” As soon as I hit the channel, I saw Gary being interviewed by Chris Hansen. The show was about Dateline going undercover with IJM in Cambodia. It was a couple of years old but the content is timeless. I was instantly taken back to the way I felt after reading Gary’s book Just Courage, and processing the conversation I had with him in December.

Even though I returned from India a little over a month ago, I find it so easy to let my heart slip back into the mode of oblivion. In the back of my mind I know there are life and death issues and injustice occurring all over the world but I retreat into my to do lists and my calendar and my email and making plans for myself.

I shove out of my heart the very things that make up the heart of God.

So, I talked to Bethany and asked if I could give away ten of Gary’s book on my blog today. It is such an important book. I think it’s one I need to read a little every day to simply be reminded that we are called to fight.

Ever feel like this?

?There must be more to the Christian life than this?more than church each Sunday and waving to my neighbors and giving some clothes to Goodwill when I go through my closet each spring.?

These aren?t bad things, of course. But they?re safe and comfortable and easy. And there?s a reason they?re not satisfying your desire for something more significant and meaningful?we?re created by God for adventure.

International Justice Mission president Gary Haugen has found that engaging in the fight for justice is the most deeply satisfying way of life. This book shows how we too can be a part of God?s great expedition.

I wish I could give a copy of this book to all of you. It is one of the most profound books I’ve read. But hey, you can win it. To be entered, leave a comment related to anything having to do with injustice. Your questions, your thoughts, your actions, your desires, whatever.? I?ll pick winners next Thursday and the winner shall be notified via electronic post. (That?s email). Use the TWEET THIS button below to earn double credit.

This post has been a good reminder of the bubble I’ve allowed my self to settle into. My best friend was exploited by her father, but by God’s grace is able to use her personal nightmare as a means of helping others heal. He didn’t serve a day of jail time, didn’t lose his job, or standing in the church. The abuse on it’s own was injustice, but for him to go unpunished was a form of abuse in itself. Again, by God’s grace, she lives above that, and uses the experience to help others process & move through their experiences.

As many know, a combination of China’s one-child policy, rural poverty and cultural traditions have created a bias toward healthy boys. And the inability of many to afford care and education for a child born with a medical condition.

This has created a surge in orphans since 1979. That policy turns 30 this year and has now created new challenges for young men.

Many Christians have responded to this crisis through adoption and orphan support, but we haven’t scratched the surface. In addition to adopting a little girl from China, my wife and I are working a team of couples to improve the living conditions for orphans deemed unadoptable. Their living conditions are unacceptable.

Anne, your post is wonderfully unsettling. We indeed live in “oblivion.” Thanks for the reminder.

Someone mentioned IJM to me the other day as being involved in work with victims of human trafficking, an issue that has become more real to me in the last 8 months since I moved to Ukraine, one of the top destinations for sexual tourism in the world. to me, being raped is my worst nightmare, and thinking of girls living in sexual slavery just breaks my heart.

I loved reading Gary Haugen’s two books “Terrify No More” and “Good News About Injustice…” as they helped encourage my heart so very much. I often feel powerless in what I can do to help i nthe fight against human trafficking. I still hope to eventually get his new book (it would be wonderful to win it). I gave a presentation about the injustices of human trafficking for about 45 minutes at my church back around Thanksgiving. It was wonderful to be able to have 47 people show up and have questions or ask about books or movies on the subject. I hope to do more but I am a mom of two small boys so I feel like I can’t do enough. I feel antsy every day that there I am sitting comfortably in my own home while people are being raped for profit on a regular basis or forced to work hours of hard labor to the point where they sometimes die in the process. It must have been so amazing to be able to exchange words with Mr. Haugen. It is a blessing to see how he has such a heart for the Lord and is willing to put his life in danger to help those who are oppressed in our world.

We go about our daily lives wanting more than what we have. We feel deprived when we can’t buy the newest gadget when it is released. We call it “budgeting” when we skip going out to eat this month so we can do dinner and a movie next month. And life goes on for our cushy American Christian world with no wear or tear about the fact that many people struggle for a day with good nutrition, a day without fear for their life, or even a day without being abused. If we really knew how most of the rest of the world lived, would we be more grateful, more loving, more giving? Would I?

“I shove out of my heart the very things that make up the heart of God.”
I am guilty of this same offense and to be honest, I think my heart gets set on ministry instead of God’s heart for people.

What the difference, one may ask?
Well, one includes lights, campuses, motion videos, vans, and rock music.

The other one involves concepts such as love and compassion, matched with life-changing actions. The part that scares me away most of the time is that the life change must occur within me first. I have to give in order for others to receive, and having less, isn’t usually a ministry goal.

i saw the special on msnbc the other day, too. immediately i thought of one of pete wilson’s blogs he wrote while y’all were in india. he talked about how the young girls who were not sponsored through compassion were so much more likely to become prostitutes. it made my heart so sad and pushed me to pray for these children daily. seeing the dateline show was a much needed reminder and this book seems like it would be incredible!

I am currently reading “The Hole in Our Gospel” by Richard Stearns, president of World Vision. In the last chapter I read, there was a great statement in there by Bono on the great chasm between our luxurious American lives in which we think only about ourselves, and the lives of people in say Africa, where they die from such simple things as not having clean water. Here it is:

“Fifteen thousand people dying needlessly every day from AIDS, TB, and malaria. Mothers, fathers, teachers, farmers, nurses, mechanics, children. This is Africa?s crisis. That it?s not on the nightly news, that we do not treat this as an emergency – that?s our crisis.?

The worst thing is that we have the awareness, access, and ability to do something about it, yet we do nothing. Only when we see their lives as truly equal to our own will we take action. Harsh, but true.

I heard Gary speak 3 weeks ago at my church in Dallas. I was saddened by what’s happening in the world and moved to to something. I’ve been pondering the last few weeks what that something is. Your blog encouraged me to start doing my part today! I’m going to get a little more educated first, share my knowledge, and give to IJM. Thanks!

I wrote about an experience I had last fall when I was doing ministry in the Red Light district of Bangkok, Thailand. We were doing outreach with the men who come to buy the girls, men from overseas… married… alone.

It was when I was in Cambodia that God broke my heart for those caught in the clutches of human trafficking. And since then, I’ve learned that I am a voice who can bring these issues to light.

    So I am.

You can read about what I saw one night in the Nana Entertainment Plaza. The name of the blog is “Injustice”. It’s because that’s what I saw.

My friend Francis, in Nakuru Kenya, knows injustice. Here’s a bit about him.

“His mother died sometime ago and his father remarried a woman with two children. His step-mother despises him and his alcoholic father violently abuses him when he drinks…which is most days. Francis showed me the scars where his father has bitten off his flesh…one wound is still open. He let me see a scar on his left leg where his dad swung a machete at him. He told me how his father recently taped his legs together and hoisted him in the air and before his dad could build a fire under him, neighbors intervened. Many days his family refuses to give him food and many nights they refuse to let him in the house so he huddles down in the bushes or garden to sleep. He told me how his father denies this bright young man the money to attend school. I could go on, but by now you more than get the circumstances of his life.

Francis then went on to tell me how good God is to him. How God spared his life by sending the neighbors to his rescue…”

Thanks to some family members and my students, Francis is now in school and has quickly become #3 in his class of 30. One of the kids in my ministry, Aaron, was so impacted by Francis’ story that he’s leaving the life his family had planned for him behind to pursue God’s call on his heart. He’ll be traveling to Kenya this summer to meet Francis face to face and begin living out God’s command to care for “widows and orphans”.

If this comment is chosen, the book will be given as a gift to Aaron.

We will only be able to engage in the hard work of doing justice when it becomes personal. But when it becomes personal we risk taking it personally. I wonder how we can remember, in the heat of the moment, that (as Cornel West says) justice is what love looks like in public?

I recently had the opportunity of getting the CRTEC certification and was once again moved at how strongly this whole matter is on the heart of the Almighty. I think a key is definitely fighting poverty and Fair Trade plays a huge role in that. Anne,
We’ve been working with university students for years until we started hearing about IJM through Sara Groves’ comments on Michael Card’s podcast. Having our awareness raised, we began seeing brothels in our city everywhere during our weekly commute to campus. After a lot of arguing with God about being called to work with students (who exactly did we think we were arguing with about our call) we obeyed His direction to start visiting the 2 brothels in our neighborhood. The 4 of us (me, my wife and two young daughter) stared dropping by in the late afternoon of holidays with gifts to try and build relationships.

2 years later He has led us to stop of visits but used what we’ve learned to connect several people and organizations that have come to us in the past few months to start a full blown rescue structure that will offer a safe house with counseling, medical care, guidance in walking with Jesus and vocational training to forestall future economic slavery needs. I would love to read Gary’s book!

A while ago I did a Bible study to see what it really meant by “loving our neighbors” – who those neighbors were, what their needs were, and what we were taught to do about it. One of my biggest surprises was that the need the Bible taught about most often wasn’t food, clothes, or even housing, though those are very important and the Bible talked about theme a lot. But the #1 need, by far, was justice.

When I started that study, I was working as a planner for a defense plant in Orlando, Florida. One of my co-workers was a lady I’ll call ?Amy.? She had two small children. Her husband drank heavily and often beat her. They divorced, and she won legal custody of the children. He kidnapped them. She went to court to get them back. Her ?ex? had an excellent job, and could afford a good lawyer. Amy, a clerical ?temp,? couldn?t. So the court gave him custody, and neither punished him for kidnapping the children nor for beating her.
Then HE sued HER for child support. She couldn?t even defend herself. She had neither the $2,000 a lawyer would have cost, nor the money to travel a thousand miles to the hearing in his new state.
He won again. The case was decided on one basis: who had money for a lawyer. Love, tears, right, and wrong didn?t help.

I was in downtown Quito and the sick feeling I had in my stomach welled up into a flood of tears that soaked my pillow late into the night. I listened to a relative of mine droll on and on about how her vacation condo suite, which sits beach front in Florida, was so poorly decorated and she relentlessly complained until they upgraded her. She tosses ridiculous amounts of money to jewelers for eye candy wearings, and yet when our church plant (which I am one of the pastors) was in jeopardy of becoming extinct, she scoffed at helping without her name being attached to some sort of recognition memorial. Our church is filled with the poor, recovering addicts, homeless and a few scattered middle class folks, and so she finds it to be an inappropriate social environment. I pray for the hearts of the monetarily rich and the monetarily poor to be woven together so that the differences would dissolve.

Gary and his team at IJM are one of the most tangible examples of what fighting injustice can look like in our world today. Like a lot of us just trying to find our part to play, the sheer magnitude of the issues they face could be discouraging, like it’s impossible to even make a dent. I like the comment above – “…that no matter how hard I tried, I could not save the world. It?s not my job. My job is to be a PART of what HE is doing.” We’re all responsible not to save the world, but to be good stewards with all we’ve been given ($, time, talents, abilities) as we join in with what God is already doing. I ran across an old old Chinese proverb that’s stuck in my mind and seems to fit well here :

I traveled to Nepal last October. That was the first time I was ever faced head on with injustice done to women around the world. We were helping with a pastors’ conference held by Mission SOS. One day in particular was very hard for me. I was one of the very few women there, only two of us were white Americans. I live in freedom…to minister, to be myself, to share beauty that is my piece of the image of God. But I felt so much shame because, for some reason, that just wasn’t ok to some of those pastors.

It was such a small, miniscule bit of injustice that was done to me. The leaders of Mission SOS sat with me that night and gave me a 30 day prayer guide called Voice for the Voiceless. They gently guided my youthful (and, I think righteous) anger toward the huge issues that are happening to women all over the world. We cried together, prayed together….and then they taught me an Austrian card game.

Since then I’ve been waiting for God’s timing to jump in with both feet. I follow IJM, and I bought earrings from Night Light in Bangkok. I’m starting to think that maybe, someday, God wants me to devote my whole life to the fight against human trafficking, female circumcision, and other horrific crimes against humans.

There is so much going on in the world. Such poverty and hardship. Starvation and genocide. Death and disease. These things are an injustice for many reasons, not the least of which being that we are all in this together and there’s absolutely no reason for these things to still be happening in the world. However, I think the even greater, maybe the greatest injustice is that there are people who know about it and continue to do nothing. Come on people, where is the love? Didn’t God create us to love one another? Loving someone doesn’t mean striving for your next big promotion while 100,000 people die of starvation. Wake up world!

I feel injustice every day, and have since Sept. 22 of 2008. That was the day I found out that my best friend had been killed by a drunk driver in a hit-and-run. On Sept. 21, my friend was walking back to her car after an evening of hanging out with her brother and some friends. This girl, who’d been kicked out of a large casino in Milwaukee, was weaving through traffic and ran a red light, hitting and killing my dear Melissa. When the cops saw a car with crash damage, they stopped her, and asked about it. She said she’d been in an accident a few days earlier…but then the police found Melissa’s purse stuck in the grill of the car.

The woman, who is 21, has been sentenced to 15 years in jail by the courts. This, aside from the fact that my best friend, and an amazing person who had so much left to give this world, is gone, is the injustice I am reminded of everyday that I don’t get to see Melissa’s smile, hear her laugh, or feel her presence.

Most of the comments referenced injustice happening around the world, but let’s not forget there’s plenty of human traffic activity in the US. I know there are some folks bringing churches, civic, and business leaders around the table in places like Atlanta (one of the major US hubs for the child sex slave trade, as I understand it) to collaborate on ways to combat this kind of injustice. In fact, I attribute MUCH of my decision to pursue a legal education to the influence of Gary Haugen and the staff of IJM. I haven’t read this book yet (shocking…). Whether I win or not, I’m so glad you are doing this giveaway if it means more people will hear about IJM.

Injustice. No one wants to talk about it really but we all need to stop and think about all the injustice and who it affects.

“Where your treasture is….” we all need a wake up call….perhaps on a daily basis. Thanks for the offer….I think I’ll read the book even if I don’t win one.

I first became aware of IJM last August at a Leadership Summit, and then since then I have been hearing of them everywhere. I remember sitting in the theater watching “Call & Response” with tears streaming down my face, just thinking “NO!” The acts of slavery playing out on the screen before me were horrifying and beyond what I could comprehend. I have a hard time watching movies because I put myself in the movie. In this instance it was overwhelming.
I am incredibly thankful for ministries like IJM, and that of Gary. I know that though the battle rages on, lives have been saved and there is HOPE! What incredible courage and faith these people have to stand in the gap where so many others have turned their faces.
Overwhelmed seems like such a small word for what I feel…

    27 million slaves.
this number baffles me & breaks my heart every time i stop & really consider the ramifications.
    27 million.
although not all of these are caught in sex trafficking, people every day are used & beaten & enslaved…& the fact that there isn’t an automatic response within the church to fight this injustice is a bit discouraging.
but there’s still me. and you. and the other 60 some odd people who have commented who have some sort of desire to see this disgusting practice come to an end.
it was encouraging for me to read through these comments & know i’m not alone. :)

My time in law school taught me a lot about injustice, and how the law applies–thanks!

Gary Haugen spoke at my church recently and the things he talked about, well, while they were shocking, I have heard about some of the injustices done. It reminds me that we have such a comfortable life and our children are so safe and protected. I would love to read his book to learn more and hopefully shake me out of the complacent state I currently live in.
