Literally.
I had the opportunity to write a more in depth article on my three year Facebook journey — the good, the bad, the ugly, for PurposeDriven.com. And see, Rick and I are on the same page.
At least the same webpage. I really have no idea how he feels about Facebook.
So, if you want the full story behind my Facebook suicide, click here to read it over at PurposeDriven.com.
And I leave you with this very important question…
If Rick Warren and Joel Osteen got into a poke war on Facebook, who would win?

a bit of a quandry isn’t it? to market you have to have marketing avenues that reach your target/segment – but what good is that if it kills you inside? even if you sold 5 mill copies of your book, you’d still be unhappy about the controlling nature of the marketing avenue (if i interpreted correctly)
be true to God and yourself – they’re a combo package. good to see you happier these days!!!
Oh no question in my mind: Osteen would never give up a poke war.

Loved your article, Anne and totally relate. I’ve been blogging and on Facebook for about a year and on Twitter for all of 2 months, so I’m more of a newbie. But I’ve found that social media is a mighty vortex and if I’m not careful, it sucks me dry.
The reality is we’re all faced with time constraints; my fervent prayer is that my choices honor God, bless my family, and prevent my brain from spinning like a Tilt-a Whirl.

Is there a facebook group to ban poking? I’d like to join…Obviously Joel Osteen would win that contest hands down. Not sure exactly why, but my guess would be that he would just out-optimisticize Rick and eventually Rick would get worn down.

great article. i can certainly see how facebook can become a distraction. for me i don’t participate in all the crazy surveys or pokes, etc. i have it linked so it updates when i update my twitter and i only get on there if i get a message from someone or need to contact someone.

Rick Warren would win. I’m sure Joel Osteen would simply let him win because he would never want anyone to ever feel bad about themselves.
i agree crystal
i don’t think it matters.
it doesn’t matter. but it’s fun to think about. at least for me.
that wasn’t meant to sound harsh. great article though! i didn’t know that Chris took that picture of you. it is one of my favorite pics of you…. ever! well done, Chris.
Good perspective in the article – we make choices (with God’s direction) for the sake of our own sanity! I regularly click “Ignore All Requests and Invitations” on Facebook. Not friends, of course, but I refuse all applications. Keeps it pretty simple for me. (I realize, of course, that I’m not dealing with thousands of friends.)
Happy Monday!

Boy this hit a cord with me, thank you for such honesty. I cannot bring my self to even set up a facebook account. My friends think this phobia is just plain weird. Although, I twtter now. blog some and read blogs like crazy. You shined some light on this concern of mine. I am not from the young facebook age, so I thought that might be it. But no…many of my friends have one. I thought maybe I just do not want to intrude on the world my 20something kids are in. But you said it, it is just one more thing that will suck time out of my day, time in which I am not sure I have. I am not that techy, but I love reading all the info. I get from twitter. What if an hour…2 hours…go by and I am sitting on facebook? Scares me. Is this truely how God wants me to spend my time? I do not have anything but my thoughts or learnings to share. What if…..well, I do not know yet. Maybe one day I will be requesting to be your friend, but for today, I do not even have time to set one up. :) I enjoy your writtings greatly and your old peeps from Westside speak very highly of you! Thank you!!
Jack Bauer.
Duh!
This is great, Anne. I have to admit (with kind intentions, I assure you), that I had questions about why you had thousands of friends on facebook but had quite a lot to say about keeping your twitter followings down. It’s good to read what your thoughts were on the whole thing.

Anne,
You mention control issues. Do you also tend toward an addictive personality? Sounds like it. Hey, girl, if you want help, send me a message. Through biblical counseling, God heals. Just imagine your future tweets.
And on the poking war, Joel Osteen would win. I still prefer the other guy. : )
Blessings, Lucy

Hey, Anne. Great article on FB. I’ve run into a few frustrations with Facebook myself, so I understand completely where you are coming from. Don’t let the criticism get to you.
As if it was anyone else’s business anyway what you do with it. Sheesh.
You do what is best for you, your walk with God, and your relationship with Chris. I applaud you for setting boundaries.

Who would win? Umm…WE WOULD! We would see that it is okay to relax, have fun and not work all the time! :)
Well written article, informative and interesting to read. Anne, you mention working on your next book. Can you tell us what it’ll be about? Do you have a working title or target publishing date yet?
I just read your article…and I am going to be honest with my comment…not harsh. Please don’t confuse the two. :-) I have had a ministry blog, currently have a family blog and also have a Facebook account. I do not twitter – mainly because I don’t want my days to be consumed with having to update people on every little monotonous thing I do. I think it’s distracting. Which leads me to my point…I think it’s a matter of opinion as to which technology avenues people prefer and what works for them. I actually prefer Facebook and don’t find it impersonal or “non-community” promoting at all. But, I “friend” only people I know or want to associate with ministry wise. Even though I know you said there is nothing wrong with Facebook – in general – I believe you made it seem like it was the “worst” of all of the technology avenues out there – when, in reality, it was the worst for you, personally. And, just because it wasn’t a positive avenue for you, doesn’t mean it can’t be for others.
@Tara – from the article.
“Do I think that Facebook (or any other form of social networking) is the bane of online humanity? No way. …. **But for me**, Facebook was a problem. **I don?t believe everyone should quit using Facebook, or be afraid of it if one hasn?t started.”**

I haven’t gotten to the point of deleting Facebook entirely [yet], but I did just go through and clear out something like 400+ “friends.”
As far as your question:
Neither would win.
Benny Hinn would interrupt with a Superpoke to the forehead and knock them both out cold.
Good article, Anne.
