Something I am SO excited about is…
We are taking some of the core values from each chapter of the book Mad Church Disease and putting them on video so churches or staffs or groups of people can use them to help walk through the book and begin a discussion.
Oh, and the thing I’m SUPER DUPER jazzed about is that they will be completely, 100%, no strings attached FREE!
We start working on them next weekend, and before we do, I’d love to get your opinion on what makes (for lack of a better term) a “teaching video” helpful to you?
If you haven’t read MCD yet, you can download a FREE chapter (which happens to be one of my favorite chapters) here.
And I just got a case of books in a few weeks ago, so if you’d like a bulk discount on books (10+ copies) just shoot me an email. We’ll get ya hooked up.
Have a great week!

Hey Anne,
I discovered Flowerdust only recently (does that make me a late starter?), and am so glad I did. Firstly, thank you for writing Mad Church Disease. It is transforming my life as we speak. And my wife is now working through it. Thank you for your insight and honesty.
Secondly, the videos; Of all the training/teaching videos I’ve seen, Rob Bell’s Noomas are the most inspiring, honest, approachable and digestable that I’ve seen. Contemporary format, nothing gimmicky, not overlong and well packaged (in all respects).
Hope that helps,
Best,
Paul
Something to be excited about Anne! Happy for you! One of the things I think is helpful in a video series are questions at the end of each teaching session. one of the good things about Francis Chan’s Crazy Love series is that he gives ideas and suggestions during his teaching and then the questions are displayed on the screen. That allows us to pause and discuss without having to constantly repeat the question or “require” people to buy a book.

I’d say
– short and punchy
– show don’t tell: little reconstructions and vignettes rather than talking heads
– ‘what would you do?’ ‘what advice would you give here?’: force a question to be answered by the viewer

Too me a good teaching video is:
Short segments.
Concise.
Includes stories…personal application type stuff.
Funny!
Move…don;t just sit in a chair or in front of a board!
Looking FW to this.

Great idea Anne, really looking forward to this.
I think the biggest thing is authenticity, if that is possible in a video teaching series.
I think what Rob Bell has done with nooma videos and now most recently Francis Chan did with his video teaching of crazy love is the new standard for video teaching.
Nothing like sitting there and watching an interactive video that is creative but full of great content.
I think it would be awesome if we could actually see the interview that you do with each person at the end of your chapter. I don’t know how that would work, but if that was on there that would be awesome.
I think your content is so good that if you include that in your video it really does not matter how you make the video, it will turn out awesome.
You should come to St. Louis on your book tour/speaking tour.

I’m very easy to please. I like the Nooma stuff but I also love Donald Miller’s story DVD that is just a recorded speaking event. When the material is good, you have a lot of flexibility with the medium. I think for Mad Church it would be important to convey through the visuals and sounds the way you WISH the church would react when people face this problem. Lots of affirmation and healing words. People in this situation are VERY fragile and need the right kind of message bearer. They’ve been yelled at and cheerleaded enough . . . time for some healing balm.

1) Funny or at least light moments
2) Sparks conversation after the video
3) Props or different clips, something more to look at than just the speaker
4) Short segments
5) Stories
Great work, can’t wait to use these with my staff!
Anne,
I don’t know that there is anything that I could add that hasn’t been said in other comments or than a personal thanks! This will be a great tool that I am looking forward to getting hold of. You ROCK!!!

I think an occasional dancing monkey would be very helpful, and keep us happy while watching.
My hubs is helping me with them…so…I am sure monkeys will be included :)
