Mad Church Disease has officially been sent off to the printer and we thought we’d celebrate by giving you a full and free copy of it. Yep. You can be reading your own copy of MCD at this time next week!
Zondervan has made special “Advance Reader Copies” available and we have twenty we want to give away!
So…for the next 24 hours, ten copies are up for grabs.
HOW CAN YOU WIN?
Leave a comment saying why you want a copy and tomorrow we will *randomly* select ten winners. The books will ship out and you’ll have them next week!
The only catch is that if you win, you have to promise to review it on your blog and on Amazon. That’s not too much trouble is it?
I’ll announce the winners on Wednesday and then share how we’ll be giving the other ten copies away.
So…
Leave a comment & let us know why you should win. I realize that’s kind of silly since winners will be picked randomly, but just play along. Cool? :)
You can also download a free copy of the chapter “Processing through Pain” here…they did a really rad design on the interior. It’s amazing.

I should win because I live in Singapore and the book would probably take YEARS to arrive over here and I don’t want to be the last person to read it! Also, I have this feeling that this is a book that will minister to a lot of people around me, and it is a book that is greatly needed so I want to be able to show people what it’s about so more people will want to read it!
I would like a copy because I am still suffering from the whole burn-out thing and it’s been two years since I was brutalized by my x-pastor. I am still feeling the affects of this along with my wife and we are struggling big time with the area of involvment in our current church. My wife could also benefit from reading it since she suffered with me and also still suffers from the whole burn-out thing and from being abused by dorm parents, teachers, and leaders during her time of serving with her parents as missionaries for years.
Thanks, Tom
I want to win a copy just because I want to read it!! And then pass it round the rest of the church workers…I’m a volunteer, but I reckon our full-time staff could do with reading it too! One copy to touch twenty lives…
x
I want to read it because I am a pastor who went through burn out and never ever wants to go through it again & who sees others approaching it and wants to help prevent it. Besides, I read a lot of books and have it on my Amazon wish list. :)
It’s free!
I want to read your amazing book for a few reasons: 1) I have experienced nothing short but hard-core MAD CHURCH DIEASE in every church I have worked with. 2) I grew up in a church that was a grace-filled and tough-love church that did NOT showcase any unhealthiness or madness. 3) I want to help my staff & others climb out of the pit they find themselves in, re-igniting their passion for Christ and their belief in the body of Christ.
Besides, Anne ROCKS and is the BOMB!
GOTTA READ IT!!!!
I would love to get a copy. I have been on the edge of burnout in the past, and I don’t want to get there again.
Yes Please
I would like to review it! I’ve been that guy too!
Hey Anne –
Love a free copy to post a review for both of the networks I write for.
Lots of burned out folks out there…
…congrats again!
I would love a copy! I’m going overseas soon and well I’d love to read it before then! :)
Hey Anne…
Would love a copy. Being a staff member at a church I love to get my hands on books like this. Thanks!
I had e-mailed you before that I had read your pages online and this book is hitting me right where I am. I would love to get hold of it now so that I can gain insight from its pages.
I would love a copy and will review it on my blog!
I would like a copy, because I need to know if I have this disease. If i don’t know what it is, how will I know if I have it and if I don’t know if I have it then I may die from it, or I may spread it to other people, and I don’t want to have that kind of guilt. I couldn’t live with my self. Is it communicable? Terminal? Chronic? what? what? what? Oh man I’m so freakin paranoid now. How did I get it? Who gave it to me? Did i get it at church? In sunday school? Youth group? where? Is there a medicine for it? I’ve gotta go wash my hands right now.
I really need this book so I don’t have to walk around with a face mask for the rest of my life.
I’d love a copy for 2 reasons.
First of all, I want to read it. I want to read it right now.
and… first of all, I’d love to do a pre-release review of the book on MinistryLIVE.org.
Pick me!!!! I’d love a copy of your book! I was a PK as a young kid and watched how the church treated my family when struggles rocked the boat. I still wonder today if the “ol deacon board” would have handled things biblically if my dad wouldn’t have left our family and the ministry. I can’t wait to read it!
I’d love a copy and the opportunity to review your book.
Just finished up reading and reviewing “Churched” and I’ve been looking forward to this book.
I’m gonna get my hands on a copy either way.
I would like a copy because I’m very intrigued by the topic of this book; burn-out is something that I’ve seen knock people out, and something that I’ve personally had to battle against. I think its a much needed book, and will create a much needed conversation. I was very impressed with the sample chapter and I look forward to getting my hands on the real thing.
Anne
I’d really like your book because I think it’s an issue that the whole church needs to read. (Plus I have exposure on our metro newspaper – more people to hear about your book!)
Love to read and review! Hope to hear from you.
JMW
I’d like it because I don’t like paying for stuff I can get for free. Plus, I want to finally figure out what the hell it is that you do.
i’m in korea to adopt a child… and “fortunate” have read your twit about this little contest!
so… um… please randomly pick me!
I’ve experienced the burnout before. And as a part of the leadership team in a church now I want to be better equipped to lead those around me.
I’m so burned out I’m not sure I’ll get around to reviewing it….. but maybe after I read it I’ll be more ready to overcome
:)
I would love a copy. And for what it’s worth, I left you on my Google reader. Not because of your wonderful acceptance/plea speech, but for the content of your blog.
Plus, I have a friend who is a book nerd, and I could finally read a book before he does.
This review will be my first post when my new & improved blog is re-launched. I can’t wait to get a copy of this exciting, life-changing book! Gee, I hope you sign it too!
Thanks.
I’d love because I work in ministry and am dealing with burnout right now!
I would love a copy! because I’m just so naive to ‘church issues’.
I’m not a ‘churchy’ person, never was, but for the first time ever I’m getting involved in my church and all the changes that are happening there. I want to hear about some of the issues/experiences others have had…..
As someone who has struggled with burnout in the ministry, I would love to receive an advanced copy of your book! When we train our leaders and teachers, this is one area that I strive to help them through. Your book would be an asset.
hey anne…i would love a copy of your book, obviously because i want to read it, but also because i lead a small group of young adult girls, some of who are getting to the point of burnout in ministry! i am always looking for new material that we can read & study together. thanx for doing this!
I’d like to win because winning is awesome. Plus I love reviewing books for my blog and trying to help people through my blog.
it’s been one of my struggles. burnout clouds people’s views of the ministry that they may be created to do…. work hard…. work none… work hard…. work none…. Years ago I started prioritizing myself, but I want to continue to break the cycle.
?Plus I want to tell other people about this book. I don’t have anything “third-party” info to share with them. I only have my confrontational opinions, but it always helps to come from a reliable source.
People need to burnout-proof their ministries. Too much is at stake!!
Do multiple comments increase the chance of winning? Ha! I’ve bought mosquito nets, adopted a boy in Uganda and followed you along this incredible journey! I’ve read your tweets from Panera and other places when you were experiencing mental blocks, as the deadlines for the book were encroaching.
It would be so sad to not have a copy before everyone else at my church. You’ve got to help me out here or I’ll lose my reputation as being the trendy, cutting-edge person they think I am. Seriously, it would be such a thrill to get an advance copy. Just let me know when you need my address. :) How could you not give a book to someone who used the word ‘encroaching’ in their post.
Why do I need this book…well because on my blog I talk to church communicators. As you probably know this is a creative bunch…beautiful people but highly susceptible to the disease. Long nights spent developing a concept only to have the church secretary chime in and play creative director, or the pastor to say start over (they saw something different at another church)…you get the idea. So I guess they actually need the book as much as I do…so once I’m done we’ll give it away.
So many reasons I need this book…
1. I know you personally.
2. I told everyone about Compassion International from the stage of MinistryCOM
3. I’ve been to Nashville, TN
4. I contributed to the book and encouraged others to do so as well
5. If I get the free copy, I’ll give it to someone who really needs it, because I’m buying one already for myself.
Have a GREAT day Ann!
Hi Anne,
I would love to receive an advance copy of Mad Church Disease. I’m always the last on staff to finish the latest and greatest book on church development and this way you can help me break that cycle! :)
I’ve been anxiously awaiting your book’s arrival for months!
After serving 3yrs on the board of directors of my church I have been afraid to return to church on a regular basis due to I am afraid I will be asked to committ.
Should I also mention I have know you since you were a child and I could tell stories? LOL Love ya glad your doing well
From everything I’ve read about this book it seems like what we all need to read – church as we know it is broken. I’m anxious to read it and glean a new thinking process – tired of the same old same old. We need to get back to doing everything with excellence including worship and church.
I’d love to read the book because
a) I need it
b) our church ministry leaders and volunteers need it
c) I counsel folks recovering from sexual addiction and burnout has been a factor for many
d) I want minister to pastors, missionaries and their families
e) I would pass it along to someone else who commented here.
Hey Anne :)
I’ve already ordered a copy & plan to blog about it anyway,(not sucking up–just the truth!) but would love to give one away to a client.
It’s about time this book went to press!! Can’t wait to see the lives it’ll impact.
I would love to read it! I’ve been following your progress and have been looking forward to it finally coming out!
I’m a single mom, church planting leader, first timer as ministry staff, just getting started and I’m already feeling the pressure and stress of being in this position!! I’m recognizing the beginning symptoms, trying to make adjustments and for me, there’s still lots of hope ahead!! ;)
Help me do it right!!! :)
Anne, You know I would love an advanced copy, and yes, you also know that i would publicly blog about it, and advertise it like crazy…Been doing that for a little bit now. I would also put some tips and tricks from the book to good use immediately in my music ministry here at our local church, and hopefully beyond. Hope I am considered for an early copy. ~Shawn~
Well, obviously I want to win, just for the prestige of saying I won. It will look good under the “achievements” section of my resume.
But more importantly than that, God has been using Anne to start my own journey of recognition that I’m suffering from a condition of burnout that God never intended me to have. I heard Anne speak at MinistryCom and the moment she started talking about her physical symptoms and different tests she had to endure, she had my attention because those are the same symptoms and tests I’ve been going through the last 4 years. Her talk on burnout has made me face the realization that I’m living a life that God does not mean me to live. I would love to read an advance copy, as someone in the trenches of burnout. As someone who has begun their journey to healing. As someone who devoured the advance chapter weeks ago and is hungry for more.
Thanks.
I would like to read it – and will regardless – because of my own experience with burnout and brokenness as a minister, something I pray I will never walk through again. I think I can learn from you Anne. I am on the road to healing but it isn’t easy and it’s hard to know how to minister in a healthy manner without slacking off. It’s confusing…..so I can’t wait to read it.
I would love to have an advance copy as a volunteer leader one of my concerns is preventing burnout in my teams and in some of our other teams.
Plus I think it would be awesome to be able to twitter to the rest of our staff that I won a free book, and then I can tell our tech director that I found out about this through Twitter (as he refuses to Twitter I can use this to “beat him over the head”), of course I won’t mention that this was also in my rss feed.
I have 2 friends who work at the CDC and neither has heard of this disease.
I think it’s my civic duty to enlighten them. Do you need my address?
I would like to read it. My church has said that it is a healthy church. That it is a growing church, but I see that there are many areas in the church that aren’t growing. I feel you can learn something from any resource, whether that be a book or whatever. As someone who is entering the ministry, I want to see what I can learn from your book.
Thanks for letting us have a chance to get an early copy,
Andra
I would LOVE a copy b/c I’m a pastor who has failed in this area. I have room to grow, and this book definitely seems like a way to help me. Thanks for the opportunity!
Randy Fuller,
Charlotte, NC
Why?
‘Cause Anne is awesome.
‘Cause the free chapter download was appetizing.
‘Cause I’m going back into full-time ministry and it will be a timely read.
‘Cause I’m pretty awesome.
‘Cause I do a lot of blog tours and love receiving free books.
Yours Truly.
I want to because…I NEED TO WIN….
ha…thats what I’ve got
cause i wore one of your red tshirts at Catalyst
and I read the free chapter
and I think the book would be helpful
and I think Anne is rad
Honestly I want to read cause you wrote it and I love SWAG (Stuff We All Get)
Thanks for choosing me for the free book!
I would love a copy! It would be nice to beat my husband in buying a new book about church ministry (since he is a young adults pastor he seems to find all these new books and he is sooo stingy with them!).
No but really, I was just telling my husband that I wanted to read your book. And totally honest, what could be better than free! LOL. Have a great day Anne.
Hi! I’d like to win, because my husband is a pastor at a small church and I think your book will be helpful to us and the church. Plus, we just love books!
pick me…pick me!
:)
From the free chapter I have already read, it sounds like a will be able to totally relate to this book. Thanks for writing it.
I should win a copy cuz I watch ‘the office,’ have a blog, and my feet stink when I ride in a mountainbike race.
I should win because:
1) I really really want to read this book
2) I love blogging about the books I read
3) I really really want to read this book!
=)
I need to win b/c I set a goal for myself to read 52 books this year, and I am running out of books!
Also, I’ve been following the process and this book coming out is very exciting!
And also, there’s this: PICK ME, PICK ME! :)
I think the concept of Mad Church Disease is great, and I can’t wait to read it. There are so many hurt people leading in church today. I know because our church formed out of a nasty split. Even today, the stress and pain from that cause many people to struggle continuing on. Keep writing and thanks for sharing a message that we all need to hear.
I would love a copy! I’ve been following along on your journey to the completion of this book since I found your blog on Los’. My husband and I are church planters w/NPCC and it’s been a hard, but rewarding road:) But, the road we followed in the past was even more difficult…. church burnout almost cost us our marriage. We both worked in ministry for 12 years at the same mega church and no one ever talked about burnout, but we watched so many marriages and friendships crumble because of it. I refuse to let anyone else go through it needlessly. Can’t wait to get my hands on it!!
because it’s random…
and because i’m completely burnt out on ministry books. need something to shake me out of this stuper.
:)
I should win a copy because I am extremely cheap and love free stuff.
Hit me up with a copy!
I really need this book because if it’s hard for me to avoid being burned out at age 17 it’s going to be really hard to avoid it when I’m in ministry for the rest of my life
Because I love reading your stuff. And because I’m a high-capacity volunteer who’s searching for ways to avoid burning out.
Pick me because I too have fallen victim to MCD.
Well, because I NEED it. And your post on church staff helped me realize it (“There are a lot of lazy church people”). It wasn’t so much that post itself, it was your fearlessness in confronting the truth.
I want to read it because I want to know what you have to say, Anne.
i should win because i would write you a persuasive review that would coerce the masses into buying & reading. ;)
and because im so freaking excited about this book & it would make me incredibly happy to read it sooner than later.
I would love to win because we were just accused of something in the church we have been at for 12 yrs! It was not a pretty sight, and I am seriously still working hard to understand this whole process.
I will blog and review about the book as well, it will just be from my brokenness!
I would like to have a free copy for multiple reasons.
1. You are very cool.
2. The cover and content looks awesome.
3. If Craig forward it, then it has to be a winner!
Looking forward to reading your book, Anne, free or not. That said, I’d love to get a sneak peek.
I get to work with a whole bunch of church communicators, coaching them on how to see themselves as ministry partners. I have no doubt that your book is going to be on the “required reading” list as I encourage them to use their gifts for the church while still keeping balance with faith and family. I trust your perspective and candor will open eyes to potential frustration before it comes our way.
Thanks for letting God work thru you.
I would like to win one because I believe this book could be a great aid for my own Mad Church Disease mess I had become tangled up into. I read the first chapter you allowed us to download and it hits home 100%. Being burned by a place and people you expected more from hurts and people need to know how to deal with it the right way.
Thanks Anne!
I would love to get a copy of it because I once got mad cow disease. It was interesting to say the least. Surely, the next version of the disease would be just as interesting.
No, seriously–my m-i-l and I love to read books and then swap. It’s always fun to read what each other has found. Your book definitely sounds like it hits several points that I have been screaming for a while…….with love of course!
Well……I don’t have a sad story about being assaulted by my senior pastor, but I would say that this is still am issue that plagues many of my co-workers and occaionally myself. I am thecl creative director at Vinelife Church in Longmont, CO. I feel luke I can use this topic to encourage others that are in similar circumstances. Thanks Anne. Keep up the good work.
I’d like a copy because I’m a faithful reader to the blog and can’t wait to read your book! And who doesn’t like a free book now and then?!!!
I’d like a copy to read and then pass it around to those who I know that are in the church…. BTW, congrats the book finally coming to print. It has to be exciting.
Susie A.
I would like a copy because after my husband and I suffered burnout from working at a church, we went through a long process of coping and healing without having anyone to turn to. The free chapter I read spoke to me on this and I would love to be able to read through this with my husband. I see it as a very helpful book we could recommend to others when in the same situation we were in.
my reasons? cuz your book addresses a genuine “unmentionable” in church communities…AND, cuz i wholeheartedly support you as a growing leader in His Kingdom! i’ve said it before: God has not placed limitations on women for Kingdom service, humans have.
sadly, i have no blog :( can i write two reviews on Amazon? :)
I would like a copy because I have shared the free chapter with everyone I know and they all thought it was highly applicable… in fact, here is what one friend said about the book excerpt: “oh my gosh.. did this Ann chick.. crawl inside your head and into the front pew of efbc…. this is crazy ….. ” I would also be able to share this book with a lot of women in ministry – who desperately need it. I’ve been working through healing from ministry issues for a couple years now and it is the roughest road i’ve ever walked….
But even if I don’t win, I’ve already pre-ordered it. I appreciate your honesty and your desire to lead people to Jesus!
I am looking forward to reading your book!
I read your free chapter after recently resigning from my position as a children’s ministry director. Your story felt so similar I knew that God had led me to find it (via Jennifer Taylor’s blog)
Thanks for putting words to my feelings. It’s clear that you have struck a nerve with many.
Best wishes for the success of your book… from one PK to another.
I would love to win a free copy of MCD because I read the sample chapter last night and was blown away! You pulled me into a time of introspection and processing after reading it because I immediately knew who had hurt me in ministry and I honestly had not been able to forgive them until last night. I was up until 3:45am processing it via blog.
Anyway, I have already pre-ordered 3 copies so that I can share the MCD-love when it gets here via Amazon.
Thanks so much for all you do!
Dean
Oh…I would love to read this and review it for you! I have been waiting for it to come out! :) I feel like I have reached a point of being so burned out and wondering why everything we are doing in the church is worth it…even though on the flip side, I know that it is.
i am already a fan…..and friends with one of your biggest fans….lynse….
i am really excited to read your book and totally willing to pay for it…will be passing it along to some folks i know!
I would like a free copy because I think it sounds like a good read but I won’t be able to buy one due to me being a broke college student.
I’m a super slow reader so if I get a head start I might be able to finish about the same time as everyone else. Help out the slow guy!
i would love to win because many of my friends and myself have been burned and burnt out. from reading your blog and the excerpts you have posted, i feel like this would be a good way to process my experiences, encourage me, and push me forward in ministry.
I am exhausted. I’m stressed at work & this book is all about helping those of us who lead very busy lives & just get burned out. I am not in ministry professionally, but I think this book can help even those of us who work in the Corporate world. And selfishly. . .I would love an advanced copy of a book.
I think I should win because I’m pretty sure that I’m the last person on earth to read this book!! So hook a brotha up!
Um. so I’m not sure why I should get a book…except that I love you, and cannot wait to read what you’ve published!
i know it will be fanatbulous
I would be honored to read it, review it, and share the love! Thanks for the great posts, the new book and the 50000.com site!
Anne,
Love your blog and I am sure that I will love your book.
My address is 9 Sunshine Blvd, Ormond Beach, FL 32174.
Thank you!
Wow with 90 people already on here wanting the book I guess a little broke church planter has no chance of receiving this book.
Just another thing to add to the old Christmas wish list
wait. got the reason.
because I’m a poor college student who’s saving up to study abroad and that costs a bunch of money. yikes! :)
Follow-up to my earlier post…It will go good with the stylin’ “whyacow” t shirt that I sported for two days at catalyst
I’d love to try and win a copy.
Because I’m curious….
I’d love to read it because Im certain I have Mad Church Disease as we speak. perhaps this book is my cure.
Because we’d love to do a “Take 5” with you over at Backseat Writer along with a review of the book!
Hey Anne –
I’d love a copy, and will probably get one even if I have to pay for it (especially if they’re going to put it on Kindle)…
I’m 30 years old and a little over 4 months ago became the Lead Pastor of a 2,500 person church. Avoiding burn-out is constantly on my mind as I want to set myself up to do ministry for a long time.
So, either way, I’m sure I’ll end up with a copy
I have dealt personally with the whole church burn out issue so I would really love a copy.
dj
I think I may have worked, in the past, at a church that may have been contaminated. I want to know if I am contaminated and what I can do to keep my church from becoming a mad church. Please help me.
Oh and I should have a free copy because I like to read and I have no budget and the small town library doesn’t have stuff i am looking for.
I think your blog is pretty awesome, so changes are I will enjoy the book. I promise to review it on my blog as well :)
I want to win because I’m the 105th comment. And everyone KNOWS that the 105th comment is THE_most_important comment of all comments. I waited for over an hour to make sure that I landed on 105… I was patient and it wasn’t easy… but here I am… #105 and OH_so_Deserving of my free copy of MCD!
:)
Looking forward to reading the book. And I already pre-ordered, so if I don’t win, that’s cool.
Anne,
I’m in seminary at the beginning of the journey in ministry. I want to read it so I can prevent burn-out in the first place. In addition, I think it would make a GREAT textbook for classes here at Truett. Thats why I want a copy!
I would love a copy of the book. I feel that we all can relate to burnout at some point and time. I also would like something to ignite my spirituality and increase my love for God in myself and in those around me…
Can’t wait to check this book out. I came within a hair’s breath of burn out earlier this year… something along the lines of fetal position on the floor in my office… not good. But God is great and my team has helped me rebuild a healthy lifestyle and get the support and accountability I need to stay strong.
Can’t wait to read this book.
Why should I win? I just went and got a big MCD tattoo on my shoulder yesterday. Does that count?
I would love a copy!
Why?
Because I’m sick of reading anything to do with the presidential elections!
Oh, and because it is a subject matter close to my heart.
I am very excited about your upcoming book and would love the opportunity to get an early copy and review it.
I want to win because I like your blog, and I like books, and it all just seems to make sense that I would read a book that you wrote.
I should win because I met you and you don’t know who I am because you meet thousands of people and as I am reading your book I will say to myself, “gosh, I met the author and she gave me a free book” plus other stuff like that. And, if I don’t win, I will forever be hearing in the back of my mind, like Ricky Bobby, “If you didn’t win it, you’ve won nothing” and I would hate to feel that way for the rest of my life and have to drive a car with a cougar in it. That would hurt my physical and emotional self so much. Ouch.
I would love to read this book because:
a) I heard you speak at MinistryCOM and you were fantastic!
b) I have worked in non-profit communications for almost ten years and thought that transitioning into church communications last winter would be a piece of cake. Boy was I wrong. I am still licking the wounds, but I’m hanging in there!
c)Your blog is great and it’s inspiring me to finally get mine off the ground.
i NEED to read it… i’m on the verge of burnout!
not really, but it’s been really cool to follow the journey of this book and see it come together… i’m sure it’s a huge feeling of accomplishment.
i’d love to read it and to blog my thoughts on it!
I am undeserving, but I would enjoy one. As an encourager/motivator and prayer warrior, I believe it will have valuable insight as to how to use my giftings for those around me with the symptoms of heading toward burn-out.
I would ABSOLUTELY love a copy of the book! As a matter of fact I have LIVED the life of the “Mad Church Disease” and would love to be able to heal and help others I know who are also affected by it.
Being in full time ministry for the last 6 years has really taken a toll on myself and my husband and a copy of this book would help us and so many others more than you know!
Thanks!
Melissa in Mel’s World
me! unless i am waiting for a copy from you or something.
I would enjoy a copy because I read a lot and I’ve been following your blog for a while now. :)
I need to read it…..
feel like i probably need a kick in the butt to make sure that i dont get burnt out. I see people around me elders and lay leaders in the church that are on the brink and it is such a great tool to have for me and to counsel others on the brink.
If I get stuck in an airplane lavatory I will have something to read….it could happen, or so I’ve heard.
I am interested in what you have to say. I love the title and am glade you are writing about the subject.
i’d love to read an advanced copy.
I would like to win a free copy and I will review it on all of my blogs, twits, Amazons, and I’ll even sneak up on people on the street and tell them about it!
I would love a copy of the book, I was about 5 minutes too late to be part of the group that helped you at Catalyst and would love the chance to ready your book and review it!!
The book sounds totally interesting and up my alley. That’s why I should win it! Even if I don’t win it, I’ll end up buying it. But I’d rather win it for free!!!!!
I would like to win a copy because I have had some burn out in the past. Plus who doesn’t like to get free stuff.
I want the free copy because I want to read the book BADLY, but have no money because YOU (Anne) lead me to support more compassion children than I could hack.
:)
And, I’ll give it an amazing review because I’m sure its INCREDIBLE!
I’d love a copy. i’m all about making myself, my relationship and my church better for his kingdom.
I want to have faith that there is a solution and a hope for the modern church.
I want a copy because I’ve been hearing about the durn thing since I was doing my MA in London two years ago and it’s about time it came out.
Awe… I never win anything… this could be the start of a new trend. :^) Not failing to mention that I have really come to appreciate your writing over the past few months… oh yeah, and I like cows… that’s got to count for something…
So, I’ve been following you on twitter for quite a long time now. (picked you up via @shameonyoko). As a result I would drop by on your blog every now and then, just getting to know you. (even though I am certain our politics differ – & did NOT stop following you!) I am interested more and more about what you have to say.
I’m not a “fan” but not opposed either, like I said – just starting to get to know you.
Guess on this election day, you can call me the moderate or undecided that the parties have tried to court over these last near two years.
peace to you @flowerdust,
@schlomoson
Throw my name in. I don’t have anything catchy to say today. ;-) I’ll be reading it either way and don’t mind purchasing but free is one of my favorite four letter words.
I’m in, I’m in! I wanna win!!!
I would like to win because I like books and I like free stuff.
Because then I would be forced to actually finish reading a book for once – which is difficult with 3 small children and a full-time job in a Pediatric ER.
would love a copy. have worked/volunteered in the church for over 10 years now and burnout has been an issue for me and other friends. working on not allowing that to happen anymore. be some great insight i’m guessing.
I would like a copy of Mad Church Disease because
1. I love to read.
2. I like to read your blog.
3. I like to read books about the church and how we can more effectively be the body of Christ.
4. You write your blog and you wrote the book.
5. When you add the first four together, you get a perfect storm of readability!
I’m a grad student being trained for ministry. Ministry burnout is something that isn’t talked about a lot, but is incredibly important to understand. Would love to read your book on the issue.
I NEED to read this book. I worked at a mega-church twice. Hubby is still a pastor there. Prevention is the best medicine, right? I do promise to review it on my blog and on Amazon.
burned out. still in recovery. disillusioned. hesistant. wondering. trusting.
I’m very interested in the topic and would love the opportunity to read and review your book. Thanks Anne, keep up the great work.
Pick me! Pick me!
Thanks!
Send me a copy of your book and I will take the money that I would have otherwise spent on it and put it toward the sponsorship of a CI child…and review your book on my blog.
Is that technically a bribe?
I honestly do not have a good reason other than I really want to read the book. I read way too much and love to share my books with others. So I guarantee that your book will not sit on the shelf gathering dust.
I am looking forward to reading your book! It resonates on some many levels with me. If I don’t win though I won’t buy it . . . Just kidding! :)
I can’t say I need to win, but maybe there is something is this book which I need to hear.
Because I like free stuff! And of course I would love to review it on my blog and any early release that I can review can’t hurt the stats!
In fact, if I win, can I then use it as a giveaway after I read it? ;)
i wanna read it!!!!!!
Pick me because I left the 150th comment on the election day on which we elected our 44th president…makes sense right? Just pick me.
Oh Kenyon, you so just got punked. hahaha. Sorry. :)
I would love to blog about the book, chosen for a free one or not. I hope to be kickin’ a freebie for the review.
I would like to read a book on burnout because I’m from Iowa and I’ve suffered through Caucus burnout in January, general election burnout today, and I work on a church staff for 6 years which qualifies me for borderline-continuous burnout. Plus, we have lots of cattle here, so I appreciate the punny title.
Would love to read new insights about how to overcome what seems inevitable. Is it the devil or are there some common sense ways to care for yourself and keep your flame burning without getting burned out. It’s something we MUST learn to overcome. The non believers use it as defense against pursuing God’s call and we become a detriment to the Kingdom.
I’m all about learning the disciplines to stay healthy and strong for the sake of Christ.
Once upon a time, you asked for input for this book. I filled out your survey and typed words of a story that I had never told anyone. I’m hoping that it helped in some small way and I’m just curious to see if I recognize bits and pieces of it in your book!
I would like a (free) copy of this book because burnout is happens rather frequently at my church.
I like to gain some insight on how one identifies with it and take steps to see his/her worth to God as something more than the things we “need” to accomplish to “please” Him. Thanks!
I think you should give a copy to Mindy. (Post 141) She needs it.
I want a copy because
1. I love your writing.
2. I am struggling with a few things and think I really NEED this
3. I am a fellow Tennessean :)
4. I will read it from cover 2 cover and let the whole world know what I think, even on Myspace where I do most of my social internet interactions.
5. I will tell my family and church about your book no doubt…we need this.
6. Because flowerdust makes me allergic and I still come here to see you. :D
7. Because you are compelled to give it to me.
8. Because I am sweet.
9. Because we southern gals like to share. Our mamas taught us that.
10. I really can’t afford any extra to buy it at the moment. :(
I should win because I am a bible college student planning to go into youth ministry in the next year or so and this book sounds like it would be very beneficial to me! Not to mention I love books and would love to add this one to my library.
I should win because I am a poor college student living in Alaska and am part of a community of college age students that is greatly involved in the ministries in and around our town of Eagle River and are risking burnout already and most of us are under 23!
A. I love books.
B. I read books.
C. I review books.
D. Um…All of the above.
I would love to review the book…it’s one of the books I’ve really been anticipating. After working full-time in the Church the last 7years I’m convinced that the Church really doesn’t understand the meaning of the word boundaries, and rather, sets up it’s staff to burnout….all in the name of being a good Christian.
So I’m hoping your book strikes a positive chord and provides some food for thought, as well as some antidote to the mad church disease running rampant.
rhett
I should win, because I have a friend who is church shopping now after being destroyed by a church he’d served at for years. He’s “hidden” in a church for about 2 1/2 years now, but knows it’s not the “right” one — but he’s still so devastated, the thought of serving again literally makes him sick. I’d love to be able to send it to he and his wife.
Me? I’ll buy a copy of yours if you promise to buy a copy of mine! (And I’ll review it here & on Amazon anyway!)
Just because…
Seriously, as someone who wasn’t raised in church and then when I did to be hurt by it, it’s obvious to me there is something deeply wrong with most churches today. I’m finally in a healthy church, but work for a ministry that has a toxic environment. We consider ourselves in church, but again, I stress the fact that there is something deeply wrong with the way most churches work today. I’m glad I attend a healthy church, but want to start my own ministry. I believe this book will provide a good foundation for where I want to go. Thanks!
I have been serving as a senior lead volunteer and I am preparing to transition into full-time ministry in an Executive Pastor role. I believe I will need to live with this book next to me as I protect myself, as well as, I will be able to use it as a tool to mentor and monitor the health of the staff.
Books like this are essential to ministry life. Of course, I will certainly blog and comment about the book as you requested!
Anne, I would love a free book because book money is really hard for me to come by. I left a church 18 months ago due to a very bad political situation. In order to protect my family, we moved home to live with my in-laws outside of Memphis. I am a pastor who now works at starbucks to attempt to pay the bills. God is doing a healing work in my life but I feel that Mad Church Disease will help that process even more. I would definitely count it an honor to receive an advance copy and would be happy to post a review on my blog and amazon.com!
I would love a free copy because for years I have been looking for a book that has been able to relate to me like no other Christian written book has before. There are so many books out there, but not for Pastors/PK’s. I connected instantly with the title because I have personally experienced and felt so many of the topics you talk about in your book. I would love to use it as another “healing” tool for myself and be able to PASS IT ON to others. I have already sold you at least 10 copies to people who I forwarded the free chapter and who will now buy it went it is released!
I blog everyday (thanks to Brody Harper) and have certainly stayed up on your many requests to support causes and would surely do the same for this book!
I would love to have a copy. I already asked for one on myspace :o) I will share it with the whole world…lol.
I’m a burned out minister who is longing for help.
I want a copy because:
I brought my “crew” with me to watch you at a church where we did not know anybody nor agreed with some of their beliefs but we stood in unity for you (and God off course:)
I go to one of the largest churches in America and know people in key areas and that would help me talk to them about you.
I am very persuasive and people a lot of times do buy the books I reccomend.
I am cool and I deserve it :)
After experiencing major burnout early on in my ministry experience as a campus minister I am excited to have the opportunity to now share some advice through your book with a staff that often times wrestles with burnout too. thanks for the opportunity
i just want to read it. :)
I would love a copy for a couple of reasons:
1. I like reading your blog.
2. I answered a survey for you over a year ago in the opening stages of this book.
3. I am willing to share the review with people who read my blog and Amazon.
4. I voted today!
Thanks again.
TJ
I would like to be able to be there to support the staff at my church, and from what I’ve seen this book could give great insight to that. I loved the free chapter that was available online! Also, it would make a good first post as I redesign my website.
First of all, I collect books.
Secondly, I’ve had this chronic cough. Your book could be helpful in my attempts to diagnose it! :)
My husband and I devoured the free chapter online. You’d actually get a 2 for 1 review in this household! I can’t wait to read the entire thing!
Me, me, me. Would love to review it…
Because I’m working my way out of burnout, which is a much longer journey than I expected, and I can’t wait until February to read it! My wife and son (even though he’s a toddler) are both so grateful for what you’ve been able to teach me. I want to know more. I need those practical steps!
But we all do. But if I win, you should send it to Paul Snyder.
Would love a copy! I’m on year 2 of a 3 year term as an active Elder in a Presbyterian church. It is a rare moment when I am not frustrated, burned out and feeling hopeless about some of the ways my church “does church”. It is a constant struggle for me to trust God and not just resign my position…
Having recently shared this frustration on my blog, would be more than happy to review a book that addresses these issues far better than I am!
Mike Mitrovich.

I NEED a copy because I’m fighting the Mad Church Disease right now! I loved participating in the early stages, surveys, etc. and look forward to seeing the finished product!
I’d love to be in the running for a pre-release copy. Why? My rugged good looks, rapist wit (eeeaasssy…just a Dumb and Dumber quote), and because i can do a killer toe touch.
Seriously – because I’m seeking wise counsel from everywhere i can right now and would love to utilize your book as a tool for thinking through and evaluating.
And finally, cause I’m an Anne (and Chris too) fan!
I think I should have an early advance copy because the exposure MCD could get on my blog review would be way beyond anything you could imagine. I think there is no way you are going to read my comment because it’s #180-something and way too deep down on the page, but just in case, I will say that it will get more exposure on my blog review than you could imagine because it’s probably more than I could imagine too. Nonetheless, we could couple the review with the interview we chatted about. I will get you questions soon!
Wow, looking at this comment list. I don’t feel that I have much of a chance.
I have been looking forward to reading this book for over a year now. The last year of my life has been one of burnout, exhaustion and depression. I am starting to pull out of it but the healing process is still just that a process. I am looking forward to hearing Anne’s experiences with the hope of finding some healing for some of those frayed edges which are still on the mend.
Even if I don’t get a chance to the pre-release. I have already been encouraged by the positive changes which seem to have emerged from the ashes of her life and that alone gives me comfort that this is just a season.
Hey Anne,
I would LOVE a copy of your book.
Out of all of the hundreds who are shamelessly begging for a prerelease copy of Mad Church Disease I should be one of the fortunate recipients because:
a) I was plugging your book on my blog back last February (http://tinyurl.com/5dp2tp)
b) I, too, am suffering from MCD
and, c) The thoughts of having to wait until February to read it makes me break out in a rash.
Thanks for you random consideration ;-)
Alan
I want a free copy because I voted today and because I participated in the surveys for the book. Looking forward to reading it.
I read the chapter “Processing Through Pain” and decided then I must have this book. So getting a copy before most everyone else would be awesome.
I would love to win the book, because I love doing these reviews for writers on my blog. I also have been following your blog and tweets, more lurking as I have not commented before. It would be nice to dive into the book and explore more about what you have written.
I’m going to read your book regardless after reading your post on lazy church people. I had heard about your book before reading that post and wasn’t really all that interested, but I think that post was really honest and I can relate to it. I couldn’t review your book on my blog because I don’t have one, but I can certainly go to Amazon when I’m done with it :)
I want the book because I nearly quit the ministry after nearly dying due to a health problem. Anne was even at my church speaking (about a different topic) a week or so after it happened. Of course I will heap gooey amounts of praise on the book and its author in every public forum – ESPECIALLY if its free!
I want a copy of Mad Church Disease because I totally…like…want one. I want one so bad that it just makes me want one even more. When I think about how much I want one I get sidetracked thinking, wow…I’d really like to have a copy of that Mad Church Disease book.
I want one.
i would LOVE a copy of mad church disease :)
Hey Anne,
I would appreciate a copy of the book to be able to read so I can learn from other people in ministry to know what should I look for in order to prevent certain things from happening to create ministry burn out or to use a Mike Fosterism, “The Assassin of Headless Sprinting Chicken.”
Why?
Burn out sucks…and I need help.
The End.
I’m burnout, cheap, and have been waiting for this book every since Terry Storch announced it and you to the blogosphere way, way back. :)
Hum… Why should I win the free copy… No clue. But I sure would love to have a free copy! Tell Pete I said hey!
Chris Reeder
ChrisReeder.com
I should win because my blog pulls in an absolutely amazing 50-150 uniques a day and 500 unique visitors a month. And that’s without being a girl with a cute pic on the front.
Uh huh…yeah I know. Don’t hate me. One day with a little hard work you can achieve this.
This media empire brought me a cool 38 cents in Google Adword revenue…back when I did that. I decided that the money was going to my head and it was time to get back to my roots. You know, for that random guy who stumbled on my site via a “anorexia porn” ask.com search. That guy needs scripture, and my blockquote might be the only scripture he sees that day.
So even though I know longer collect fees from misplaced Book of Mormon ads, clearly my eager readers are bankin’ it, and some of that money could be yours when I convince them to buy your book.
Plus, I have almost 400 friends on I’m-better-n-you-book. Imagine all those status line readers at your disposal.
It’s up to you, but it’s an opportunity of a life time…lemme tell ya.
Cause Todd Rhoades recommended the book and also recommended you as a speaker for our conference. Also I’m dying to read a good book written by a young female author.
An advance copy? Absolutely! I’ve been wanting to see MAD CHURCH DISEASE ever since the first PR on the book came out a few months ago. For a fly, that would be a lifetime of waiting…
I would like a free copy because it is clear I have loads-o-faith, since I am making a plea for a free copy as commenter #201 and still believe I might *randomly* win.
Michael Trent
I’d love to read it. Sign me up!
I’m in! Interested in the topic. Doing bivocational ministry. There you have it!
Because as a ministry leader I have come close to giving up on doing what Jesus wants me to do because I listened to a few people whom I believed more than God at the time.
Anne
You know me and I will read it and then blog IOn my blog and anywhere else I can share the book
I’d like a copy because I use to work for a church that has a huge reputation for firing pastors.
i want a copy of your book because pete totally plugged it in his message on sunday!!! that and i’m interested to see what you have to say about health in the church. :)
Not sure why I should win……but I really want to!!!
Ooh ooh pick me, pick me. After a journey of 5 years so far going from place to place, serving in ministry, and trying to have good discernment, my husband and I are back at square one, picking up the pieces, trying to re-ignite our passion, obedience and stewardship. Trying to bounce back from the burnout.
Anne,
I think I should be “randomly” selected because I read Matthew Paul Turner’s book “Churched” and loved it… it would be a perfect way to continue to gain insights on church health. Plus, you see how I can drop names… I’m pretty shameless when it comes to promoting stuff I like. I’ll plug it on my blog, twitter, facebook, etc. I’ll even consider using it in a teaching series. I’ve been pumped about reading the book since I saw it when it had the “Lucky Strike” cover.
I’d love to have a copy of this book!
My husband (Chris Reeder, above) and I just started out in this whole ministry/church planting adventure, and it would be great to know what pitfalls to avoid BEFORE we get there. Kind of a “what NOT to do” thing, ya know??
Anyways, thanks for doing this!!!
Have a great night!
I would like to win it as shipping to Australia is far too restrictive via Amazon or any other online seller. The other reason is that I’m already a victim of church volunteer burnout and would like to move past it.
I think I should get picked for a copy of this new book because I’m a youth minister with a house for sale in one state and rent to pay for my current home….and I can’t really afford to buy it right now. I love to read and the book sounds like good one. Possibly a powerful tool for ministry.
I would like to read the book and then give it to a friend who was talk about writing a similar one, until she found out that you had already written the book that she wanted to write.
I’d love a copy of the book. So I can pass along the ideas and concepts to those I partner with in ministry.
I would love to get a free copy of MCD – after all, I am mad about Jesus, love ice cream, & must be ‘diseased’ to be in full time ministry and a pastor’s wife too!
I would like a free copy of MCD because I live in Michigan where the economy is in the toilet and if you don’t give me one I’ll have to wait to read it until one shows up used on Amazon. Probably with pages missing. The very pages I NEED. Then what Anne? Then what will I do?? Thank you. and congrats cutie.
I want a copy, because when I went through burnout over two years ago, I searched the internet and found YOU. I have been eagerly awaiting your book (and emailing you once in awhile) for a very LONG time, and I am even going to lead a small group with your book! :) YOU ARE AWESOME! PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE send me a book!
Jodi :)
I should win b/c I make yummy cupcakes.
Plus having to write the review would help me finally read and finish a book!
I should win because I will read it and then give it a wonderful review on my blog. Cuz I don’t know how it could suck if it was written by Anne.
I thought before I made my comment I would read the sample chapter – but I knew I wanted to check out this book because I am a pastor’s kid who has witnessed my parents serve for years in a small church and saw how different things took its toll. Then the first page in the sample chapter mentioned the affects of being a preacher’s kid. I am interested in reading more – possibly to work through my own bitterness and how to better navigate through future situations.
I should win to help my election anxiety, and I’m a “Crosspointer”. :)
A free copy of Mad Church Disease in my hands would be so great because (1) as of Sunday, I will be unemployed; (2) as of Sunday I will be unemployed by a church; (3) as of Sunday I will be unemployed by a church and will not be looking for another church job. As I read Mad Church Disease I will probably be saying a lot of “Yep, that’s my church” and “Yep, that’s me”, and “Yep, why am I saying Yep? I’m from Colorado dangit!”
So help out an unemployed ex-church staff member who has no idea what he’s going to do next – at least if I get a free copy, I’ll have a short-term goal of reading through it, and then another short-term goal of blogging about it and still another short-term goal of reviewing it on Amazon.
would love to read “mad church disease” Pick me :)
I’d love a copy of MCD. Reasons why you should GIVE me one?
1) single mom
2) five kids
3) church job
4) no money
5) moved by your writing
6) blog read by 10s of people
7) will review
8) will be blessed
9) will pay it forward
It’s so hard to give a reason better than someone else… i’m sure we all want a copy of your book… but since it’s “at random”… i’ve got as good a chance as anyone!
So… Let’s see…
Reason 1: I’m a 21-year-old female… which i’m sure it would be nice to have representations from all walks of life.
Reason 2: I’m very opinionated … I love God… and I love people… I also love writing on my blog… especially about some of the subjects it looks like it’s going to cover in your book.
Reason 3: On a more personable note… i’ve been a christian for roughly 10 years… and i’ve had a church break my heart… twice. It’s been hard to rebuild my life after the last time I was dropped… and I still work through it everyday… I lost one of my best friends… and I almost lost my faith in church… not in God.. but in this thing called “church”. But it’ll be nice to hear some words of wisdom… especially when you know what it’s like.
Well… if that’s not good enough reasons… I’m not sure what is! Win or Lose… I will still own a MCD book in the end!
Keep up being awesome!
YOUR MISSOURI SUPPORTER.
I want to win cuz I like winning things!
I would love to have a copy of this book. It looks very interesting. Thanks!
I’d like to have a copy.
Congratulations on the publishing of a book, how exciting.
I would love to read this book!
I might cry if I don’t. It’s true. I might. Seriously. Real tears. And, such.
I should win because I can’t afford to pay for it!
I should win because I go to Cross Point Nashville.
I’ve read all the comments and couldn’t think of a funnier or better reason to post. But would still love a copy of your book.
Hey, this is erika the Catalyst cowgirl again. I so hope I still get a free copy or can now win one? I will review it on my blog, I promise. The original way I found you and your blog was because I caught wind of your soon to be book. I can hardly wait to read this! Please, please!
I would love a copy of this book because I read the preview chapter and it was so what I needed. I went to school for ministry, I interned in a church doing ministry, and I’m currently doing camping ministry. I do not want to burn out.
I would benefit from this book because I have the mad church disease and I am mad about it. I attend a mad church in a mad city in a mad state. I work with mad people teaching mad students and constantly hearing from mad parents. So, reading a book about being mad and getting over could just change my life. And by the way, if I don’t win, I’ll be MAD!!!! = )
I should totally win this book because I never win anything except the one time I won a pizza for my school at a teacher’s convention, oh and I won a purse once at a leadership meeting and then there was the time I won two prizes at a women’s conference….maybe I do not need to win this book, but if I do I will definitely read it and review it on my blog. And BTW – the name of the book rocks!
i would like a copy. why?
1. i’m canadian and i didn’t vote and therefore already feel left out. a free book will make me feel better.
2. it is possible that i (or someone i know) has some sort of mad church disease already but i won’t know until i can verify it in your book. you could possibly save a life…or lives.
I want a copy of because I don’t want to end up …LIVING IN A VAN DOWN BY THE RIVER!
do i still get my copy for buying books for those pastors in the DR? just wondering?
I know how to read.
I would like a copy because I am burnt out and I feel like I could have Mad church disease!!!!!!!! Please send to me!
I would love a free copy because I admire the author and am too broke to pay for it.
In reading the free chapter made available from our friends at Catalyst, I resonate with Ann! I too have been swallowed into the black hole of some of the evile things that go o between Christ-followers. I have been involved in the middle of church political and power struggles. I bear the scars, but have endured in the church as the one single hope of the world. It’s great to see not just another book about how to be successful in church. I have been part of a church that I founded along with a team that has grown to over 1000 people. Half of that team is gone along with some of the idealism I once had, but God’s BOLD HOPE remains. A great artist, afflicted with arthritis, was once asked how he could paint when the very action of practicing his craft caused him excruciating pain. He responded, “The pain passes, but the beauty remains.” Such is the hope of the church and the reason I stay in the place of leadership. This book is, to use the words of Margaret Feinburg, a “Sacred Echo” of God that will echo in the hearts of leaders and followers in the Christian church. Way to go Ann! Your book will bring hope to those caught in dark times to let them know that the light prevails through the pain. I hope to ecure a copy of the book. Free is great, but I will read it nonetheless.
My goal for 2008 was to read 52 books. I need to read 12 more books. before The New Year!!! I would love to add this book to my list of 52!!!
I would like a free copy because today my wife is in the hospital and will most likely be on bed rest for the next four months, and I want to read her books to keep her entertained, especially since we will be planting a church in 2009. Your book would get us started on the right foot! We’ve been trying to get pregnant for 8 years and are experiencing some complications now in our 25th week of pregnancy. This would be a nice way to distract us!!!
I would love to win it because I have grown up in church (a music minister’s kid) and have worked in full time ministry for the last 16 years. I’d love to hear all that you have to say in your book!
I want one because I love the local church…really. And, I want to see if there is something in this book that would help me make the local church a safer place to be a part of! Besides that, I am sure that my pimping the book on my blog might be worth getting a copy. ;)
i want a copy ‘cuz i’m greedy and i like to get stuff. and brag about it, too.
oh, and ‘cuz i’ve been following the dang thang for over a year now waiting for it to come out. i work in a church and REALLY understand the MCD thing and want to see if you nail it like it needs to be nailed. john
I’m moving to SE Asia for missions right after Christmas, and I’d really like to take a great book with me on the flight. It’s 21 hours (have mercy, Lord). The first time I went over, it was painful, and I need something to grab my attention. PLUS, I’m super duper intrigued to read it! xoxo.
Hi, I am already loving the chapter you let us download. It speaks to my heart.
I really really want something for free. Call me cheap. But I never win anything. Please oh please pick me.
I have heard of the ‘myth’ called burnout… maybe this will reveal the genesis of such a strange concept… maybe.
I should win because I am fascinated with the title and with the topic and have been looking forward to it coming out for some time now.
Byron – you guys will be getting the real deal!
