seth godin’s head is going on my fridge

so you know when you used to get an “A” on your spelling test, your parents would put it up on your family’s fridge, right?

this is kind of the grown-up-i-love-marketing equivalent of that. mom, my name’s in business week! and i’m printing it off and putting it up on my fridge. along with seth’s head.

several months ago, business week interviewed me for an article on seth godin, and how his principles and brilliance have been absorbed in many channels — from corporations, to artists, and even to little girl bible bloggers (yours truly).

anyway, the article arrived today and you can read it here!

what’s one thing that seth has said that has stuck with you?

Congrats. What else is on your fridge?

Seth rocks. I love that you can email him and he actually responds and it appears if you have something worth saying he genuinely enjoys the correspondence.

Permission Marketing has always been my crutch from him. Especially relevant to the church. We have to build trust before we can build influence.

Peggy Noonan said that when she wrote something one time and President Reagan scrawled a “very nice” on it that she wanted to pin it to her shirt and wear it around for the rest of the day :) Enjoy your moment – that’s big!

You need a Seth Godin Action Figure if you don’t already have one. (or two, or three.) !

well it would have been several years later before i’d know who Seth Godin was… if it weren’t for you. i’ve definitely learned to get to know my product well. and from there, making it remarkable. a regular cow is nothing special, but a purple cow is unique. that is what we have to make our product. even if it is something old and done before… there’s always ways of making it remarkable and new. SOOOOO relevant to The Church and what we’re selling each and every week on Sunday and beyond.

seth says… gone are the days when the marketer tells the consumer what to buy. the consumer is now telling the marketer what they(the consumer) wants…if companies don’t listen to that…then the consumer will go to someone who will.

    Have kept this one. http://sethgodin.typepad.com/seths_blog/2008/06/is-it-worthy.html

“The object isn?t to be perfect. The goal isn?t to hold back until you?ve created something beyond reproach. I believe the opposite is true. Our birthright is to fail and to fail often, but to fail in search of something bigger than we can imagine. To do anything else is to waste it all.”

Mark, I once heard him say something “perfection doesn’t leave room for imagination” — I love that.

    Business Week. Very Cool.

just yesterday I learned this from Seth Godin……..

changing worldviews is very difficult; changing the data at hand is a lot easier; presenting more data in a palatable form helps move the conversation forward; the best way to change the world is to open the closed-mind

I also follow Seth and the one thing he has taught me is that

    Stories matter– A LOT.

oh oh oh….. “If you can’t state your position in eight words or less, you don’t have a position.”

I have learned many lessons from Seth Godin by using Squidoo.

First and foremost is that it does not have to be perfect the first time. I make a lens, and publish it, and then continue to make it better and better. That attitude gets rid of the “it must be perfect” freeze, and helps folks like me really get productive — with a parachute of “I can redo it if I want to “………..

the other most important thing — among many – is the idea of tribe or community. Squidoo is like a community — friendly, helpful, a great big family.

    I am most appreciative!!

    and Congratulations to you!! Wow!!

whoa, no way! I just read some of his best blog posts from the past two years. I love the one about patience and tackling great ideas. the one thing that’s stuck with me that I read every day is this: “You are a bootstrapper.” It’s from his e-book the Boostrapper’s Bible, which talks about tackling projects and startup businesses not how corporate giants do, but how everyday people like you and I do. He says to remind yourself that you’re a bootstrapper, to post it on your bathroom mirror and anywhere else you look every day. to be honest, i never finished the book. but i put that little phrase in my phone, and whenever i turn it on, it’s the first message that flashes across the screen. the coolest part is that i’m beginning to believe it.

OH BOY – I’m addicted to Seth, but one thing he wrote this week as summed up my mission in Marketing:

In an increasingly commodified world, it turns out that genuine expressions of kindness and art are valued more than ever. -Seth Godin

I have this taped up in my cube (I create promotions and gifts for our company).
