i will be the first to admit: i can be pretty self-absorbed. i don’t think about how many things i consume or throw away in a day, a month, or a year. after all, it doesn’t seem like very much. i’m just one person.
artist chris jordan has some stunning pieces of art to represent production and consumption in america. (disclaimer: some of the photos could be considered graphic in nature, but not in a smutty way).
here is an example of one of his prints. it represents the 410,000 paper coffee cups used in the USA every fifteen minutes. (39,360,000 per day, if you were wondering).

Sounds like Starbucks et al should be charging per refill on their travel mugs instead of by the paper cup–if they really want to stay socially conscious.

It’s not the cup that concerns me as much as the plastic lid. Ever since I went to Canada, where they make you ask for a lid, I have been telling the kind folks at my local coffee shop to keep the lid…maybe I should just get a mug.

Ah! I definitely need to stay conscious of this as an avid coffee drinker. Invest in a mug to carry in your car! Starbucks gives 10 cents off if you carry your own. It saves in the long rong (the earth and economically)!
