there is a severe weather seminar in our apartment complex’s clubhouse tonight. i am so there. and i am so excited. i’ve had this marked on my calendar for a month.
i love tornadoes. i’ve experienced 28 or so of them up close and personal (and blogged some of them here)
what makes you a nerd?

I send thank you notes to any (& I do mean any) one who does volunteer tasks at our church. (i.e., empty A trash, refill paper towel or tp holders, pick up candy wrappers on church lawn, etc..) And people say “You don’t have to send me a thank you note.” Yes, I do! It’s my Nerd passion! P.S. I was in tornado once in Tulsa; so I’m mortified. I’m glad you love them…after the meeting, please blog the best advice you have on not being so afraid of tornados…ugh!
you’re going for the pizza.. don’t lie!
what makes me a nerd? I suppose people would call me a nerd for blogging and reading blogs from people across the world who I don’t even know. Man they’re missing out, don’t ‘ya think?
im just a full on geek, i even have a t shirt to say so, I work as an IT tech, play computer games, and just am always doing something on a computer…
2 things:
apple computers and an obsession with geography.
Nerdism – hmmm – probably that I’ve become interested in (DH says obsessed but I think he is harsh on that one) blogs and bloggers. Also, I believe that knowing more is better than being ignorant and unfortunately I think other people want to know all the facts in my head!
Having my grocery list on an Excel spreadsheet. I have it categorized by aisle for the two different stores I go to. I’m a sick, sick woman.
I’m more of an Arts and Humanities geek, with a love for the printed word, drama, and poetry. Never seen a tornado. NJ is kind of lacking that way.
I would so be at the meeting too! Someday, I want to go on one of those storm chaser trips…where you ride around in a 15 passenger van with a storm expert. My husband thinks I’m crazy. I am so fascinated by tornadoes! One time when we lived in Ponca City, OK there was a twister headed right for our church building, and I was standing outside while my husband is at the door screaming for me to get inside. That was fun…he didn’t think so.
Speaking of twisters, my wife once told God 8 years ago, she would go any place for him except where there were tornadoes. So here we are in Kansas!
Hey, they’re serving pizza! Why not? ;)
my incredible desire to blog and twitter every little thing that happens to me, and my amazing desire to take a picture of just about everything that i can.
big nerd am i.
i’m a nerd because i turn up the music in any vehicle that i’m driving and sing. i’ve been known to lock people in it so they can’t get away. just ask my sons and their friends! i don’t sound a thing like matthew west, kari jobe, and etc.
What makes me a nerd? That’s easy…THIS DOES.
My resume has more acronyms in it than words. As if that wasn’t bad enough, I read Lord of the Rings and the Chronicles of Narnia on an almost yearly basis.
Plus, I really enjoy random conversations about quantum physics.
hmmm…my need to take a mental note of ~anything~ in a conversation i don’t know about, come home and google it and read for hours on the subject. that and the fact that i usually have about 4 books i’m reading at any given time. right now it’s “the forgotten ways” “organic church”, “anna karenina” and “marie antoinette”. pretty nerdy!!!
I have a Lord of the Rings tattoo and a dresser decopouged with Lord of the Rings pictures plus many, many other LOTR things.
Yea, I know.
oh and I am a 40 year old wife and mother.
Anne, you crack me up! Ok, I’m a nerd because I L-O-V-E the show Farscape… yes, that’s sci-fi. But it’s REALLY, REALLY good. Trust me.
I grew up in Oklahoma and now go to Oklahoma City University.
It’s hilarious to me when there’s a tornado watch in Tulsa and newer out of state students are running for the basements.
My rule: if I can’t see it. I’m not getting off the couch.
Man you didn;t move to OKC early enough. You missed the big honking ones a few years ago. I hate to see the damage they cause but I just can’t stop watching them. Usually from on top of my roof
I’ve been in graduate school for 8 years. And I watch political debates for fun.
Wow, so that’s how you spend your time now that you’re done with the rough draft of your book.

same thing.
i still hate that our storm spotter training course was canceled and that we never toured the weather station with gary lezak.
i love cleaning, esp bathrooms. i listen to what my husband calls “mom music” and i like to be in bed by 9:30 if i can help it …
i have a color coordinated closet and clothing drawers…i love ironing clothes…i can’t wear things that don’t match, especially athletic clothing by brand…they can’t mix!!!
LOVE STORMS! i’m a nerd because I just got the 1828 version of Websters dictionary.
I’m a nerd because I used to get mad when people would step on ants. I still do, actually…And don’t do it just to tick me off…I have authority over evil! :)
I am also a nerd because I always have my nose stuck in a book.
Farscape rules (that does not make us nerds, Jess!)
I am a weather junkie too….grew up in Oklahoma and India so I was either looking for tornadoes or monsoons.
Anne, you sound like my good friend Mike. He has a rainfall meter in his backyard and we live in Phoenix. And he is known to send texts and pictures after storms too! I could go on and on, we love his quirky obsession!
I am nerd b/c I also color coordinate my closet, have an abnormal song recognition talent and I married a nerd! We even met as high school band nerds :)
Nerd + me=
~in school for a total of 23 years straight, would continue with school if dad would keep paying for it…forever
~love to watch TV shows that teach me something (History Channel, Discovery, FoodNetwork, HGTV, etc)
~i spend my free time thinking of ways to better improve my church’s educational ministries, coming up with strategies to get that done, then talking with the pastor about how to get it done.
~i took Greek for 4 semesters and didn’t think it was enough…took Hebrew for 1, is WAS enough
~i have a desire to get a calculus book, physics book and other science/math textbooks to read and work through FOR FUN!
NERD?? you tell me……
I am a coffee geek. I’ve got a three hour doc on DVD about coffee that I’ve watched like 6 times in the last year. I know why only a PORTION of your coffee purchasing should be certified fair trade… and the rest should be premium quality. My coffee maker at home sits idle because it’s so sub-standard compared to using my french press.
I’m also an aquarium geek. Got a dozen running in my basement. Belong to the Aquarium Society of Winnipeg. If you’re not talking about fish using their latin genus and species names then I don’t even understand you.
I am the band nerd that nicky married (see above). But I played drums so it cancels out, right?
I’m a nerd in so many ways. I like to smell paper. Glossy paper, carbon paper, many different kinds. Don’t know what it is, it just smells neat sometimes.
I haven’t even discussed the nerdy computer stuff. I think I’ll stop, though, for nicky’s sake.
Part of my nerdiness, and ALL of us responding to this post should check it out TODAY (hint, hint) … http://www.wordspy.com
you are wiser than the guy that said ‘if i can’t see it….’ the people in moore didn’t see it either
that’s why there is a state of OK, so they can congregate in one small place
Nothing. I am not a nerd…but I married one. Yay!
i’m a jock…but my inner nerd is all about pro formas…nerd i say more.
Nerd qualifications: I love Wayne Newton and Barry Manilow; I think Tom Jones’ version of “Kiss” was much better than Prince’s; watched Star Trek religiously(the orig & Next Gen); I love to watch storms–I’m the one standing in my front yard watching the clouds swirl screamin’ “Earl, its 10 feet from me! its 10 feet from me!” There’s so much more.
Just read in the Dec 2007 edition of Wired Magazine the eight best “Geek Sports.” They are racewalking, segway polo, badminton, hacky sack, curling, jousting, fencing, and disc golf. I think you get to be a nerd or a geek if you like or aspire to like at least three of these sports. My three: hacky sack, jousting, and disc golf. (I’ve actually never jousted, but would love to try!)
i highlight good phrases, thoughts, sentences in all my books … even fiction. yeah.
i read other nerd’s (like yourself) blogs
mike … that was hilarious! haha! i have the same thoughts on tornadoes after growing up in tornado alley.
I am an expert in Linux, Windows and Mac. One up: I used run SuSE Linux on two Sun SparcStation 20s for about 8 years. In my apartment.
I try to read Hebrew and Greek and I don’t even know the languages. One up: some reason, writing in Hebrew makes sense.
I have read The Simerillian. One up: I have played MERP and LOTR RPGs.
Oh yea, I have played more sessions of RPGs than I care to remember. Yes, this includes D&D.
Oh yea, I used to play EverQuest and World of Warcraft.
I have a 16 year collection of comics. One up: they are all in plastic bags with the cardboard backing.
My favorite sci-fi is the likes of Blade Runner, Star Trek II The Wrath of Kahn and of Firefly/Serenity. One up: I am an official Browncoat.
I have rented every single Anime movie in my hometown’s video store. The anime collection was two rows, front and back. I did that before I left high school.
Ladies and gentlemen, I am a full blown geek for sure.
Earthquakes, baby!
Nerdness = Reading the back of packages of stuff I buy at the grocery store.
discussing which font looks better (serif, sans serif, etc.)on teachers powerpoints (oh and their color scheming) + noticing lighting and framing on facebook photos + buying an “iVote” tshirt, because it had an apple on it + getting way too excited because there’s a camera that can shoot beautiful pictures with an ISO of 6400 = nerdy.
:]
The 8th anniversary of the tornado I was in is coming up (March 28th!), the one that hit downtown Fort Worth in 2000. Man, I can’t believe it’s been that long, it’s still all pretty fresh in my mind. I guess you don’t really forget experiences like that.
There is so much to choose from. But I’d say the number one nerd factor in my life is the absolute glee I get from listening to a Grammar Girl podcast!
Joe,
you win.
I secretly enjoy watching the Disney Channel even when my kids aren’t around.
I have Saved by the Bell on my DVR. and Pretty in pink. and sixteen candles. and I can’t seem to delete them. Yeah.
I just decided I’m the coolest person on the planet. I got NOTHING on these folks. :-)
Oh Anne, that is super adorable!
What makes me a nerd? Sometimes, when I get off a shift in the ER, I still come home and watch the Discovery Health Channel. Like I didn’t see that stuff for the past 12 hours, in REAL LIFE. ::sigh::
MY HUSBAND makes me a nerd!!!!!!!
or maybe its my job at a library…. snort snort.
Well, let’s see…how long do you have?
The first one that comes to mind is the Barry Manilow CD I listened to for much of the afternoon.
Tornadoes? Yikes! Okay, so you got me on weird. Not sure I can top that, but let’s see . . . umm . . . I buy everything organic, including make up. Yep, gotta be organic! People look at me like I have two heads. My husband just wishes I would give it up.
I absolutely love weather with personality; I’d much rather deal with a storm than a dreary, blase day! So far, I’ve lived through multiple earthquakes, two hurricanes, 1 tornado (from a distance), and a mini tsunami.
I’m not really fond of devastation, and I hurt when I hear of fatalities, but there is something truly awesome about seeing the raw power of God manifest in nature.
Oh yeah. The nerd thing? I’m a safety geek. Goggles. Ear plugs. Orange vests. Steel toed shoes. MSDS sheets. First aid kits. Vehicle packs. Flares. Beacons.
Usually my husband snickers and tolerates my safety antics. Early this winter my husband balked when I begged him to take an avalanche safety course before going snowmachining. Weeks later, after he watched an enormous avalanche bury a friend (a day after another one killed four people), he asked me to sign him up for the safety course.
Score.
I didn’t know writing thank you notes, loving fonts, highlighting great phrases (I write them in a journal that I keep), color coordinating your closet (longsleeves, shortsleeves, sleeveless sorted by prints, colors then whites in each section!), loving cleaning bathrooms and going to bed early make you geeky. YIKES! I’m a huge geek.
My original geek qualification: I collect rocks and sort them…. I have a bowl of round or smooth ones (my favs) and large bowl of unusual ones then lots of others all over the house and yard. My screen saver is even a picture of rocks.
probably how much i like to hang-out at lexington’s airport and watch aircraft…
i have my private pilot certificate (which helps explain my affinity), but still…i could do it almost everyday if time allowed…:)
oh, yeah…NASA TV and The Weather Channel
Ok Anne, Just saw that my link in my first comment doesn’t work. HTML support off?
What makes me a nerd? Once again, this does:

:) Zak
what makes me a nerd? do you have room for me to type that? the fact that I have like 4 blogs maybe.
I fixed my car exhaust pipe with a 50 cent piece of wire from the hardware store.
I created a chemistry program for a TI-83.
I try to add up all the grocery prices in my head while adding tax. My goal is to be within two cents.
Some people buy clothes; I buy books.
Everything I do makes me a nerd.
