I thought I was getting better, but I would have to say the cold hit me full-on today. Can’t complain, really. I only get them maybe once a year, so I know life will go on. But I was wondering if anyone had any of those gross cold remedies that really work, like blending green things with cayanne pepper…that kind of stuff. So far my theraflu has been helping a little with the coughing and making me sleepy…but does anyone have any secret recipes?

Well, I do but I don’t know if I’d recommend it…My brother who lived in the bush for awhile swears that if you lay on the bed on your back with your head hanging off the side of the bed and you put 2 drops of Listerine in each nostril, and sniff hard… You will either get rid of the cold or appreciate it, one or the other. Can you believe him?? I’ll pray harder.
I’m not sure if it would help you (since you said “cold” instead of allergies) but a friend of mine says Aller-ease works great. sneezing, runny nose, watering and itching eyes
I asked her about it. Here’s what she says:
yep, it was Aller-ease… the main ingredients are Quercetin 300 mg; Bromelain (2000 gdu) 150 mg;
I get it at my chiropractor’s in Frisco, but haven’t found it in a store here yet, but the health food stores and Whole Foods carry the Quercetin & Bromelain in pill form…
Aller-ease
well…i have don’t any nasty cold remedies… but i beat my last cold by drowning myself in echinacea. Ricola Echinacea Honey-Lemon drops are real good and full of it. that and vitaman C drops.
that is all i got…
sorry you are still not feeling well.
a guy who’s mentored me in leading worship swears by this stuff called ‘airborne’ (i found a knock-off version for a bit less). it helps boost the immune system with zinc and vitamin c and all sorts of good stuff. you drop a tablet in water, similar to alka seltzer or theraflu. doesn’t taste great, but doesn’t taste awful, either. it doesn’t make the symptoms immediately go away, but it does help the immune system do its thing so you can get better more quickly. i’m also a big fan of zinc lozenges, particularly coldeeze. of course rest and fluids are also very helpful. take advantage of nighttime cold medicine. being sick usually keeps me up, since i’m coughing or blowing my nose a lot or otherwise uncomfortable, so if you find a good cold medicine with drowsiness as a side effect, take it, so you’ll be knocked out. and drink fluids like a fish to flush the germs out of your system…
oh, and pray. pray a lot.
those are my secrets… hope you feel better soon! rest up! :)
Growing up my grandma gave me this cough medicine that tasted so sweet. Before she passed I was taking note of all the things about her I wanted to remember and be able to pass on. I got to the cough medicine and she started laughing so hard. She told me it was whiskey and honey…it always shut us up. WHAT IN THE WORLD!!!! Bur she swore by it…
My Indian friends say for a sore throat drink hot tea with salt in it…and that one works for me.
Wow thanks guys! Candyce, I have the Coldeeze and have been eating them like candy…
I will be doing the Nyquil tonight for sure….
the Whisky and honey thing I have heard. My parents gave me that too when I was a baby I think. (YIKES?!)…so i might see if I can land some (for medicinal purposes, of course). :)
I feel much better than I did this morning, but I have just been sleeping, watching TV (My Date with Drew on DVD – fab!!) and doing some freelance design.
A humidifier.
So there I was at Target and your man snuck up behind me…What a great surprise to run into him. Although I wish I could have seen you as well. Anywho, I showed him a little massage somethin somethin that should be able to break up some of the congestion. I hope that it helps. Love you and hope that you are done feeling gross.
Along the lines of Deana’s remedy – In the redneck world of Telford we take Rock Candy, Honey, Jack Daniels and Lemon Juice. Mix it all together and let the candy melt then take it by the spoonful every hour or until Mr. Daniels starts making his prescence known, if you know what I mean. *Winkity Wink*
Also Zicam Cold Remedy works pretty nice but it tastes awful and you cannot drink anything for 15-30 minutes. I took that airborne stuff last year and I think it actually helped some but not enough to be worth the $10 my pharmacy charges for it.
I have a bit of a sore throat and congestion too so I feel for you and am hoping you get to feeling better.
Oh and belated Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
hey everyone – stop trying to get anne drunk! :)
hehe
So my dad says that as he was growing up my grandma would make him swallow spoonfulls of Vick’s Vaporub. I’m not sure about the medicinal affect on your lungs, but it may loosen up other bodily systems…
somehow i think eating vicks would harm me more than drinking the whisky!!!!
oh my word, lori!! and i thought vicks 44 syrup was wicked awful…
Wow, Maybe you should revamp your statement about working at Westside…..hee hee….Don’t you have to sign some sort of contract about drug use or something?
Ha my Nanny used to line my mom’s throat with vick’s! I didn’t suggest it because…I don’t think it is supposed to be injested!
There are these new things I’ve used a few times for stuffy head this year called SudaCare vapor tabs. You put one in the shower while you’re in there and the vapor steaminess makes you breathe!!!!!!
Kristi – yeah, only about alcohol use – not drugs! they dont mind my meth habits….jk :) btw, thanks for the massage idea!
it’s amazing how much a shower has helped. my body feels so much better but my head feels like a big ball of snot and my voice is almost gone from coughing. at least i will feel better infecting all my coworkers tomorrow… ;)
