  • three places

a pile of laundry awaits me to transition it from dirty-to-clean. my apartment needs a good vacuuming and dusting. i have quite a bit of writing i need to accomplish today, but with my car sporting a fresh flat tire, i cannot drive to my favorite writing spot in the west village. words flow out of the woodwork there.

a year ago this week, i was finishing the little things for my fall trip to scotland. i can’t believe it’s been a year. i miss it terribly. this year, i have been attempting to pay down my debt (credit cards – almost gone…medical…well, i still have a long way to go. thank you gallbladder.) my leisure travel has been limited to destinations on I-35…austin, oklahoma city, kansas city.

so, here i am…sunday daydreaming of three places i have never been, and desperately want to visit (american-ly speaking):

    -new york city
    -boston
    -seattle

what 3 US cities would you like to visit?

  • who dropped the soap?

when my friend was on a mission trip in his high school years, the group of guys he was with had the luxury of a communal shower. i believe most high school boys would find this an awkward situation, trying to keep their insecurities hidden by staring very intently at the tile wall in front of them.

the rule of the communal shower was “eyes, straight ahead.” during the course of one of his showers, he heard a noise – a thud. looking down toward his feet, he noticed a bar of soap slide on the floor, right behind his legs. within seconds, a hand – only from the wrist up – grabbed the escaped bar. as quickly as the soap had appeared, it had disappeared.

it doesn’t take a genius to figure out whoever this alleged soap-dropping-person was had to come into pretty close contact with my friend’s then sudsy derriere. now, he was faced with a life-altering decision.

does he turn around and identify this brave (yet clumsy) person? or does he choose the safe route, eyes unmoving from the innocent tile wall?

    he chose the wall.

yesterday while in kansas, i had a woman come up to me and introduce herself. she attends my old church and has been reading my blog. she was awesome and she thanked me for being transparent through this avenue of blogging.

i have to admit, this computer screen in some ways is like the wall at which my friend chose to stare. i am honored that you drop by in some way or another and read these mostly muddled thoughts i toss out into cyberland. but truth be told, it’s a LOT easier typing these things than it is physically talking about them with someone.

i got to spend some time today sharing about my struggles with stress and anxiety – things i have easily blogged about before (feel free to read through the “depression” category)…however, looking someone in the eye and saying, “yeah, this is where i really get hit” didn’t come out quite as elegant, witty, or as anonymous.

honestly, i think i was surprised about how uncomfortable it was talking about these issues in person with a small group of friends as compared to writing it for however many random strangers to read. and as therapeutic as blogging these things has been, and as much as other people have shared the “me too” connection through those posts, there is definitely a huge difference in the amount of difficulty sharing such messy things to real, live-in-front-of-you people as opposed to typing them out for the whole world to see.

all of this rambling to state the obvious: i don’t think blogging or an online community can take the place of real life interaction and sharing. can it compliment it? absolutely. i will talk until i’m blue in the face about the amazing things that can take place online.

but looking someone in the eye after they’ve been up and in your ugly parts is a completely different – and now i realize very essential – dimension.

we are in kansas city…we left around 7:30 am from the rockwall airport, i popped a klonopin and dozed off most of the flight. it got a little bumpy and we had to change which airport we landed at, but we are safe and sound. here are some photos from our trip so far!

  • trip to kansas city

chris and are leaving this thursday to go to kansas city to hang out with some old friends and family and former coworkers from westside family church. we have been hoping and praying that our friend and lake pointe’s media pastor, wes hartley, would be able to fly us up in his plane so we could avoid airline travel as well as avoid the dreaded 9 hour drive.

it looks like the weather will be rainy, but okay to fly in on thursday and sunday. i ask that you pray for the weather to be great flying weather, and for safety for all of us as we travel to and fro.

the cool thing is, you can actually SEE where we are when we’re flying. on thursday or sunday, just go to flightaware.com and where it says “Flight/Tail#” enter in “N7379K” and it will pull up a radar of his current flight (if we are flying) or a log of his last flight. pretty sweet huh?

anyway, we are so thankful for wes and his generosity to take time out of his busy schedule to help a couple of kids out.

and if you live in kansas city and can pick us up from (probably) the airport in lee’s summit to take us to get our rental car on thursday (not sure what time yet…maybe lunch time or a little after??), we will be thankful for you too. (hint, hint)…we’ll buy you a starbucks or something!

to see our most recent flying adventure with wes in a quick little video, you can click here. there are some cool downtown fort worth & downtown dallas skyline shots.

at 9pm CDT tonight, the top ranked dallas mavericks need some help getting their stuff together and actually getting more points than fouls…your prayers are appreciated.

  • the grass is greener [on the other side of the world]

i’ve noticed from the “introduce yourself” post that quite a few of my blog readers are from australia. i’ve subscribed to their blogs now and with each read i more and more find myself wanting to move there. it’s autumn there, you know.

lately, i’ve also been in touch with some friends from scotland. i even had a lady from an ad agency in edinburgh email me last week asking for my CV (resume) and art portfolio, completely out of the blue. talk about temptation! i sent it along, knowing full well we can’t afford to move overseas, or afford to apply for the HSMP to get our visas.

all of this comes down to my struggle with contentment…being happy where i am at and not day dreaming of far off lands (which i hold in idealistic regard). if money were no issue…i think my dream would be to travel and write for the rest of my life.

    what would you do?

  • crazy.hectic.grief

my grandfather passed away early this morning. it was expected; in fact, he was supposed to pass away two years ago…what a fighter!? anyway, his memorial service is tomorrow evening, and i will be out traveling a lot the next few days.

i will be leaving dallas at 6:30 am monday morning and have a layover in kansas city for three hours (so if any of my old kc friends want to come party at the awesome KCI, i will be there from 8 am to 11 am…just call or email me!)? then it’s off to LAX where i pick up a car and drive to san diego (it is much cheaper to do that than to fly into SD).? then the memorial service, sleep, and leaving SD tuesday morning at 9:30 am to head back into LA where i hope to catch up with some old friends and maybe…just maybe…meet mr. carlos whittaker face to face…

tuesday night i crash on a couch of the generous martinez family, and wake up early for my 6:40 am flight back to dallas.? i get back in dallas at 1:30 pm and head into work to send some stuff to print!? whew!

(i think i really typed all this out so i can know what i’m doing and if i forget i can check my blog…)

aside all the crazy/hectic aspects, please keep my family in your prayers as many of us are traveling to and fro, and that we will be able to give my grandfather the wonderful and sweet memorial he deserves.

he was the first guy to give me a really “girly” outfit (i was a tomboy) and always encouraged me to show my feminine side (now, i am a bit too girly, but i thank him for that).? he would always bring me books when he would visit and we’d go on walks together.? he was a very sweet man, who became a christian in his late 80’s.

thanks for your thoughts and prayers…

  • community…

I have heard the blogging community compared to a real community of believers. And how although it’s just virtual, we can live out like the Early churched lived – sharing, caring, giving, praying for others. I have personally experienced this in many ways – from sending Christmas cards, receiving Christmas cards, a complete stranger letting me borrow his PowerBook for three months, prayer for my surgery, for others, and when we needed several hundred dollars last minute for our mission trip to Scotland. I don’t remember exactly how much PEOPLE I HAVE NEVER MET invested in my trip, but it was several hundred dollars and the way God worked in and through people was an extreme miracle and God’s glory was clearly shown.

I know write on behalf of one of my closest friends. I met her when she was a wee high school senior, then she joined the staff where I worked at the church in Kansas. We took trips to Texas and chased cowboys, took photos with street vendors selling roses, and she shared with me one of my most embarrassing moments (which I will not – and she will not – mention). She eventually became part of the Communications Team and I had the honor of watching her grow professionally as an artist and spiritually as a person. She is one of the most generous people I know (and I know this because I do her taxes every year – It’s sick. I love doing taxes. So sue me.)

Now my dear sister Crystal Renaud (AKA Pink Haired Girl) is taking a huge leap of faith and has signed up to go to South Africa on mission in a few short months. She is in the same position I was in several months ago – a last minute time crunch to come up with serious cash. Last I checked, she needed around $1000 and she needs it by January 15th.

I URGE you – think about the way you value these blogging communities we have formed. Let your actions speak louder than your words. Be unreasonably generous. You probably don’t know Crystal. You probably don’t know me. But I know Crystal and I know God has called her to go on this trip.

If you would like to act on this, visit her website dedicated to her Africa trip here. You will see what she’ll be doing and the organization she will be working with. I personally have met the founder of Oceans of Mercy and God has been doing amazing things with him. Another friend of ours worked at the AIDS orphanage for a few months this past year, and my very own maid of honor and her husband will be going out there as missionaries as well.

Please pray about this and think on this. I can think of no one better way of showing the validity of online community than by supporting our friends in ways that will make the world a better place, and give glory to God.

  • bonnie scotland

i had a dream we were back in scotland a few days ago and ever since then my heart is breaking on how much i miss it. hanging out with the petticrews, the baines, rosemary, all the wonderful people we met in glasgow, and even taking roxy for a walk with mairi up the hills behind their house…climbing all the stairs in the city centre which left me out of breath the first two weeks, sleeping with the windows open, riding the buses, letting my clothes air dry, watching everyone else eat haggis, walking princes street and rose street at 1 in the morning taking it all in, praying with each step, looking in the windows of the flats lit up with life…knowing how much more life there is yet for that city…the city of dreams as geoffrey has dubbed it as we all sat up on salisbury crags, listening to james talk with such passion as he shares god’s vision for edinburgh. we must go back. soon.
